Alcatel made a splash at Mobile World Congress with their Idol series of phones, launching the Idol 4 and Idol 4S, but their mid-range ‘POP’ series is getting a refresh as well with the company launching the POP 4, POP 4+ and POP 4S.
The phones have a focus on customisation with a different range of styles, as well as colours, design, size and performance available to choose from across the range. There’s also some solid specs in there with a great camera experience coming to the Pop line with the Pop 4 and Pop 4+ offering an 8MP rear and 5MP front facing camera, while the Pop 4S will go high-end on the rear camera with Alcatel including a 13MP sensor and dual-tone flash for better quality night shots.
The batteries are unusually large for the mid-range devices, but include a ‘quick charge’ function as well, offering a 50% charge in just 30 minutes, an admirable addition to the Pop range.
Spec wise, we’re looking at :
Pop 4 | Pop 4+ | Pop 4S |
5” 720P HD IPS Display | 5.5” 720P HD IPS Display | 5.5” 1080P FullHD IPS display |
Mediatek MT6755M Octa-Core processor

8GB onboard storage with microSD card slot

With a slim body and curved display, the Pop 4 series are pretty good looking, but Alcatel has announced a selection of four cover collections offering users a chance to customise the look of their phone. There’s Hairline-Brushed, Leather, Wood and Baby Skin options – {We’re assuming the Baby Skin is a synthetic ;)}.
CW Park, Chief Designer and General Manager of Global Design Center at ALCATEL said of the new Pop 4 series devices
To consumers in their early 20’s, the POP 4 smartphone is ‘designed by you, inside and out. The POP 4 series offers a huge collection of covers to fit every personality. It’s the ultimate tailor-made smartphone because customization is always a top priority for us.
Australia hasn’t had a huge exposure to the Alcatel Pop range, and at this stage Alcatel hasn’t announced any plans for the release here, or indeed around the world. Alcatel will announce more plans for the devices as they launch around the world.
