Mobile World Congress is fast approaching, with press announcements expected to begin around February 24th ahead of the official start of the show. LG has already started inviting press to their event where we expect to see an LG G8 announced, but a new report says we may actually see a 5G enabled LG V50 announced alongside it.
The report out from Korean news outlet ETNews, says that LG will switch up their usual strategy of launching their G-series handset at Mobile World Congress and following it up later in the year with a V-series phone launch, announcing both devices at Mobile World Congress.
The phone will be announced at MWC, before heading to market with carrier partnerships lined up in North America, Europe and in LG’s home market of South Korea.
Aside from the 5G modem, the phone will be packing a good deal of hardware with a 6-inch display and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with a large 4,000mAh battery and a ‘water-cooled cooling unit vapor chamber’ to ‘overcomes the heating problem’.
The timing for the launch is possibly tied to Telstra’s recent announcement of securing exclusive access to 5G devices, of which we’re hearing that LG is at least one of the manufacturers they’ve lined up.
Optus announced their 5G rollout plans yesterday with a $70 per month unlimited plan on offer to a limited amount of subscribers with three sites currently live and a further 1,200 sites planned to be live by March next year. Vodafone and Telstra won’t be far behind with with both carriers expected to follow suit with a 5G rollout this year.
LG hasn’t announced anything officially as yet, but we’ll have feet on the ground in Barcelona at the LG launch, so we’ll be finding out their plans as they announce them.
