HMD Global has announced the latest Nokia 800 Tough rugged phone will launch in Australia this week, on Thursday 10 October. This phone is tough enough to chock your caravan (or an aircraft, probably): its dustproof, waterproof, designed to withstand falls of up to 1.8 metres, and extremes of temperature as well.

In short, it should be pretty well indestructible (my words, not HMD Global’s, mind you), and I’m super excited to see just how tough it is. It’s not just toughness, though, that makes the Nokia 800 Tough stand out. Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global said:

Given our heritage of durability, we’re very excited to announce our first ever rugged Nokia phone. We know how important it is for our fans to have a reliable phone, especially when working in more demanding environments or going on trips to explore the world. With Nokia 800 Tough we’ve taken durability to the next level, making sure it’s both water and dust proof, with climate protection.

With the added drop protection, Nokia 800 Tough is truly built tough. And of course, we didn’t want to give our fans just a durable device, so we’ve made sure Nokia 800 Tough is built with today’s needs in mind. That’s why we’ve included the Google Assistant, social apps and 4G connectivity, for all the best experiences on a smart feature phone.

With an IP68 rating and testing to MIL-STD-810G standards, the Nokia 800 Tough should be able to withstand water, dust, -20 C to 55C temperatures, and basically whatever abuse you can hurl at it.

It’s also super smart, with Google Assistant and Maps included, as well as Facebook and WhatsApp preloaded. It mighn’t be a smartphone – and it isn’t designed to be – but it can keep you in touch in harsh environments where you might not want to risk a fancy premium smartphone. It’s also got a battery life that’ll last forever, and so if you’re looking for connectivity for your devices on the go, the Nokia 800 Tough would make a great long-life WiFi hotspot for your other gear.

This Thursday, 10 October 2019, the Nokia 800 Tough will go on sale at Harvey Norman (in-store and online) and JB HiFi (online only) for just $199.

“It’s also super smart”…. what does this even mean? Why is everyone adding “super” to everything? It’s like a virus has infected humans everywhere and now people can’t stop describing everything as “super”. The other one is “I know right”. Everyone says “I know right” in response to anything they agree with.

Going forward it would be super helpful if we could go ahead and find some new words.
