Samsung Unpacked 2022 delivers the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip 4 devices

It’s time for the next wave of Samsung devices and with their usual flare, the Unpacked event has just finished. Unsurprisingly, the main features were the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip 4 devices.

In the press release, Garry McGregor, Vice President, Mobile Experience Division, Samsung Electronics Australia said:

Without a doubt foldables have more than emerged, they’ve arrived and have a bright future. The foldables market is predicted to continue its rapid growth, more than doubling in 20232 and the fact Samsung Australia has maintained year-on-year pricing we see this being very much the case in this market. We’re proud to have established this category and of where they have evolved to today. The journey has had its challenges but to overcome them, we listened and put feedback into action with improvements to all key areas from design, durability, usability, affordability, power, app optimisation and more.

Let’s take a closer look at the phones though.

Galaxy Z Flip 4

In previous generations, one of the general criticisms of the Z Flip devices has been the front screen lacking capabilities. Well, Samsung has taken that feedback onboard and made much more of the front screen. The cover screen is now able to do so much more including SmartThings controls, controlling calls and replying to texts.

The physical design of the device has been further leveraged by Samsung too with camera features being added to FlexCam. Optimisation for social platforms is among the camera highlights.

The specs include:

• 1.9-inch Super AMOLED 260 x 512 resolution cover screen
• 8GB RAM with option for 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of storage
• 3,700mAh battery with 25W Super Fast Charging capabilities
• 12MP ultra-wide and 12MP Wide-angle dual rear camera plus 10MP selfie camera
• IPX8 (1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes) water resistance
• 5G, LTE, Wifi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity
• Single Nano + eSIM
• Android 12 with One UI4.1.1 out of the box

The variants start at $1,499.00 for the 128GB version, move to $1,649.00 for 256GB and peak at $1,849.00 for the 512GB storage option.

Galaxy Z Fold 4

This is the first device to ship carrying Android 12L, specifically set for larger screens allowing users to take advantage of that extra space. The taskbar gives better multitasking capabilities and, coupled with more intuitive gestures, the Z Fold 4 isn’t just a phone it’s a productivity tool.

There is a lot to be impressed by when you look at the specs of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Powered by a Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1 Mobile processor, and with the camera again having been upgraded on the Z Fold 4, now sporting a 50MP wide lens and 30x Space Zoom lens. The screen is distinct being a 7.6-inch Main Screen running 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

With so much tech jammed into a device, it’s no wonder it’s quite chunky. 263 grams and 67.1 x 155.1 x 15.8mm (folded) or 130.1 x 155.1 x 6.3mm (unfolded). That also includes a respectable 4,400mAh dual battery with the same 25W Super Fast Charging as the Z Flip 4.

Being the top of the line offering from Samsung, the Z Fold 4 is a pricey device regardless of the options you choose. All options carry 12GB of RAM and start at $2,499.00 for the 256GB. Moving up if you want more space, $2,699.00 for the 512GB and a whopping $2,999.00 if you need 1TB of storage.

Both devices will be available for pre-order beginning August 11 with general availability starting September 2 in Australia.
