Human Mobile Devices (HMD) and Mattel have collaborated and launched the new HMD Barbie Phone, a throwback to the classic “dumb” flip phone. This device is designed for those looking to step back from digital distractions while embracing the iconic Barbie aesthetic.

The Barbie Phone, priced at $199 and available from September 5, covers the basics of calling and texting and has a minimalist design that takes many of us back to simpler times. For those who are likely to purchase this phone, it’s more than just a phone — it’s a fashion statement, complete with a pink exterior, a built-in mirror for quick touch-ups, and a host of customisable options.

The phone has two interchangeable covers for nostalgia lovers inspired by classic Barbie designs: the vibrant swirls from the 1992 Totally Hair Barbie and a vintage shooting heart motif. Users can further personalise their device with a beaded lanyard and Barbie-themed charms, including a mini roller skate and a tiny ice cream cone. The phone also comes with sparkly gems and retro stickers for additional flair.

Designed with the modern Barbie fan in mind, the phone’s interface includes bespoke features like Barbie wallpapers, app icons, and soothing ringtones. Hidden Easter eggs, such as a special Barbie code that unlocks surprises and adds fun. Despite its retro appeal, the phone has a 0.3MP camera, perfect for capturing Y2K-style photos.

Ruth Henriquez, Mattel’s Head of Licensing EMEA, highlighted the phone’s innovation and the playful experience it offers. Meanwhile, HMD’s Global Chief Marketing Officer, Lars Silberbauer, emphasised the phone’s role in encouraging users to disconnect from their smartphones and enjoy life offline.

This release taps into the growing trend among Gen Z and young people increasingly embracing digital detox. With more time spent with friends in person and less online, the Barbie Phone offers a chic and nostalgic way to escape digital noise.

The HMD Barbie Phone is available at major retailers like JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, and Amazon.
