Sony Ericsson may be a bit behind the times when it comes to high-end hardware, but that hasn’t stopped them from announcing three new mid-range Android devices in the Xperia ray (bottom), Xperia active (left) and Xperia txt (top). The three devices are to launch in the third quarter of this year in selected markets, which hopefully means us even though Sony Ericsson have stated the Xperia txt is only for Singapore at the moment. Hit the break for a breakdown of each device.

Sony Ericsson Xperia ray

The Xperia ray is a nifty looking devices that reminds me of the Acer Liquid, except smaller. It has a 3.3″ display that packs a FWVGA (Full Wide Video Graphics Array) 854×480 Bravia Engine Reality Display that measures in at ~297ppi — now that’s some nice pixel density! This is the same pixel count and display technology as the Xperia Arc and I can tell you that screen is amazingly good. There’s the obligatory 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and Adreno 205 graphics processor which is more than enough to power the ray, which runs Android 2.3 and features a whopping 8.1MP Exmor R camera which can of course shoot 720p video.

Thickness is not an issue with the Xperia ray only measuring 9.2mm thick and apparently only weights 100grams. To ensure you can run this bad boy for a full day there’s an 1500mAh battery, which is the same size as the Xperia Neo. We can’t wait to see this land in Australia, if it does.

Sony Ericsson Xperia active

For all you geeks that love going out into the wild world, there’s the Xperia active. It features a 3″ 480×320 Bravia Engine Reality Display; a 5MP camera that can shoot 720p video; and is dust and water resistance if you don’t drop it in the middle of the pacific ocean, obviously. The Xperia active uses the same corner-button UI as the X10 Mini series of devices to better suit the smaller display. There’s also ANT+ which, according to Sony Ericsson, “makes it possible for you to connect a compliant heart rate monitor directly to your phone to monitor your heart rate in lots of different exercise applications out there“. Sweet.

Sony Ericsson Xperia txt

Sony Ericsson made it pretty clear in their blog post that the Xperia txt would be headed to Singapore only, though we thought we’d post it up anyway just in case they decide to bring it down south a little more. As you can see from the picture the Xperia txt has a very similar design to that of the HTC ChaCha. There’s a 2.6″ QVGA screen, which deeply upsets me; 3.2MP camera and a ‘friends application’ that I would imagine allows you to stalk your friends by the means of txt and social networks.

Whoa, I gotta say that the Ray is one sexy looking device.

I was gonna go with Samsung Galaxy S2 but now that I saw the XPERIA ray, I will wait until it reaches AU other I will consider an import (if it has good reviews).

Ray is the only one there that looks good imo, and it looks very good!

The Ray looks good. Definately that and the Arc would be in the picture of the next purchase.

The xperia ray looks beautiful, the kind of phone I’d look at buying next. Although it’s a shame none of these phones are dual core. The active looks ugly but I think the txt will definitely fit into the teen market.

If Australia gets any of these phones, I hope it is the ray.

I’m also liking the ray. Pixel density is key.

I know you must have a few phones on your list to review but do you reckon that you’ll have a look at the Ray too? And perhaps the Active as well?

Buzz Moody

Absolutely 🙂
