Nikon is my favourite camera brand, I have the D90 which I take with me when I expect to do some photography and they’ve just announced that they will be releasing a 16MP point and shoot camera which will have Wi-Fi and GPS built in, the S800C. It will be powered by Android 2.3.3 so you can also grab apps from the Google Play Store and Tweet, Instagram or Facebook your photos directly from the phone providing you have a Wi-Fi hotspot to attach to.
The Specs are pretty appealing :
- 16MP 1/2.3-in Image Sensor. type CMOS; total pixels: approx. 16.79 million
- 10x optical zoom, 4x Digital Zoom NIKKOR lens
- 4 GB Internal Memory + memory card slot(SD/SDHC)
- f/3.2-5.8
- File Formats :
- Still pictures: JPEG
- Movies: MOV (video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, audio: AAC stereo)”
- 1080P Video Recording
- ISO 125-1600 or ISO 3200 (available in auto mode)
- HDMI Output via mini-HDMI and High Speed USB
- 111.4 × 60.0 × 27.2 mm @ 184grams
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n – WPA/WPA2/WEP
- Bluetooth® (ver.2.1+EDR) – A2DP
Gizmodo has also been given an indication that the price would be in the $449 – $499 price range and is on-sale from September 27th locally. No indication of retailers but I’d say you’re pretty safe to bet that if your local Nikon dealer hasn’t got it in stock they’ll be able to order it for you pretty easily. I myself need a decent new point and shoot so this could definitely be making its way onto my christmas list.
Geez, Android is going everywhere these day. Isn’t Panasonic making washing machines, air conditioners and ovens compatible with their Android phones
Fantastic! I hate using a camera these day as it feels like the photos are locked so far away on that little card.
Having a few clicks to send and share photos directly is perfect.
Actually I’d have been happy just to have a camera with Bluetooth so I could just fire them straight into my phone.
aren’t there already cameras with bluetooth?
buy Eye-Fi connect SD-Card, works for most cameras
It should have been designed with 3G data capability as well as WiFi.
and then you should be able to make phone conversations and send text messages…wait a sec, this sounds familiar
Julian, in order for this Nikon to have access, anywhere, anywhen, for sharing photos you take, with the social media services, you need 3G data connectivity, as well as WiFi.
I am well aware of that Jeni, clearly you misunderstood my attempt at humour
Wonder if it will be up-gradable to Jelly Bean at some point
lol, thinking no. Doubt there’d be any way to do a mod or anything either with all the proprietary camera gear as well, still all you need is basic Android apps to do some amazing things
I really doubt it, and to be honest, there’s not alot newer versions will add. The only potential issue I forsee is apps dropping support for GB (a LONG way away, given the massive amount of phones that wont upgrade past GB) or new apps being 4.x+ only (like chrome).
Neither of these are huge risks though IMO.
The only thing I’d really like to see is a zero-shutter-lag camera option like on many newer phones, but I don’t know if this is a hardware limitation or could be done with the right apps regardless of android version.
