Spotted in a Dick Smith Electronics catalogue this afternoon by eagle-eyed Ausdroid editor Daniel were these two bargains which we thought were cool enough to share with you.
Firstly, the Xperia Z is available on special at Dick Smith now for $624. Bear in mind though, this is a limited-time offer, and the price will revert to $698 after the promotion concludes. When we reviewed the Xperia Z, we were pretty impressed, and at this price, it’s a great option for you to consider.
The second thing Daniel saw, which will be great for you NFC nerds (enthusiasts) out there, are Samsung Tec Tiles available in a pack of five for $14.95. While these aren’t the cheapest NFC tags you can buy, they are probably the easiest ones you can buy in Australia in a bricks-and-mortar store.
With the possibilities for NFC tags only limited by your imagination, these might be a great purchase. I’ve personally used NFC tags placed near the front door to automatically deactivate bluetooth, turn on WiFi, and do a Foursquare checkin at home.
Equally, a tag at work is used to silence my handset, turn off WiFi and Bluetooth, and enable a portable hotspot so I can use my personal laptop when needed without having to fiddle with my phone.
It’s been a long while since NFC first landed here, and the fact that you can now buy programmable NFC tags in a Dick Smith store is a testament to this.
There’s a lot of Xperia Z advertising around at the moment. Bus stops, on big tollway signage. Sony is going serious this time around.
Tempting price, but still gd to get from carrier as it then comes with 2 years warranty 🙂
there are only 1 colour option at dse i presume really want the white one tho anyone knoe any retail other than sony store sells the white version

Nice, they seem to work on the Nexus 4 as well which I might try. Thanks for the heads up.
They are MIFARE tags. The Nexus 4 cannot write to them.
They seem to work. Couldn’t hurt to try any way, only $15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaJ7oPD5v7U
Mifare will work but the tags I suspect are the type that the nexus 4 NFC chipset does not have the ability to write to, Samsung does.
With them you can store functions based upon the tag unique ID but you can’t program functions into the tag.
If you’re looking for tags, then try nfcwireless(dot)com(dot)au. Just got a bunch from there recently and they work great.
NFC tags work great on any phone with NFC. Tried it on my S3, my mums Xperia Acros S and worked flawlessly. Just got some cheapy ones from China too.
BOTH THE OPTIMUS G AND THE XPERIA Z ARE THE SAME PRICE, YOU HAVE HANDLED BOTH, WHAT WOULD YOU GET? EVEN THOUGH THE OPTIMUS G IS 720P, IT SEEMS TO HAVE AN AWESOME DISPLAY AND SOME SAY ITS THE FASTEST PHONE THEY HAVE USED, EVEN FASTER THAN THE NEXUS 4, AND THE XPERIA Z HAS A SUSPECT DISPLAY BUT WITH MORE PPI, BUT HAS LAG IN SOME BITS, BUT ITS WATER PROOF, BUT ITS 1 METRE, FOR 30 MINS :/ , EVEN IF YOU DROPPED IT IN THE POOL IT WOULD BE FINISHED, UNLESS YOU ARE ROCKING A 1 METRE… Read more »
STOP SHOUTING
You would be fine if you dropped it in a pool, just don’t leave it there! I’d go the Xperia Z even though it may be slightly slower than the Optimus G 🙂 And yes, PLEASE STOP SHOUTING!!!!
PERSONAL PREFERENCE IS THE OPTIMUS G. THE XPERIA Z JUST HASN’T IMPRESSED ME, BUT THE OPTIMUS G WAS PRETTY DARN COOL
THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT, A SMALL FEE HAS BEEN CHARGED ON YOUR BANK ACCOUNT FOR BEING IN MY PRESENCE. I DONT KNOW WHY SONY IS STILL USING THERE DISPLAY TECH, ITS JUST NOT UP TO PAR WITH OTHER MANUFACTURERS. A SAW A VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AND THE IPHONE 5 WAS CURBSTOMPING ITS DISPLAY, DISAPPOINTING, ITS LIKE BUYING A CRAPPY 1080P NO NAME TV FROM DICKSMITH, ITS 1080P, BUT ITS STILL CRAP ;D
Optimus G is a nicer feel, less lag and just works better. Xperia Z has weird lag with the camera and seemingly has random ELF issues as well. Yes it can survive a dip in the pond or the pool but that’s really just a party trick. The Optimus G is probably the better all round handset. Its fast, has a great battery life and is much easier to hold than the Xperia. That’s my vote, anyway.
