New Nexus 7 - Pic

At the Breakfast with Sundar Google event this morning, Hugo Barra, Vice President, Android Product Management at Google officially announced the new Nexus 7 which we’ve seen leaked pretty thoroughly so far already. Announced simply as the Nexus 7, there is no ‘New’ Nexus 7 title, however the original Nexus 7 is now labelled as Nexus 7(2012) to differentiate them.

Let’s get down to the official specs :

  • 7.02” 1920×1200 HD display (323 ppi), 1080p HD IPS, Scratch resistant Corning® Glass
  • 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, Adreno 320 GPU, 400 MHz

  • 1.2MP front-facing camera, 5MP rear camera
  • Stereo speakers, Surround sound powered by Fraunhofer
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4G/5G) 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC (Android Beam), Bluetooth 4.0
  • GPS, Gyroscope, Accelerometer, Compass, Ambient Light

    • 10 hrs of web browsing or e-reading
    • 300 hrs of standby
  • 114 x 200 x 8.65mm @ 290g grams

The Nexus 7 has built-in QI compatible wireless charging, but no mention was made of an accessory to supply the wireless charging at this time.

Now, there are 3 models – 16GB Wi-Fi, 32GB Wi-Fi and 32GB LTE. Hugo Barra only made mention of US carriers and availability of LTE for the US, however they advised that the 32GB version will be ‘with global 4G LTE support’ :

  • North America
    • 4G LTE: 700/750/850/1700/1900/2100 MHZ (Bands: 1/2/4/5/13/17)
    • HSPA+: 850/900/1900/2100/AWS(1700/2100) MHz (Bands: 1/2/4/5/8)
    • GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
  • Europe:
    • 4G LTE: 800/850/1700/1800/1900/2100/2600 MHz (Bands: 1/2/3/4/5/7/20)
    • HSPA+: 850/900/1900/2100/AWS(1700/2100) MHz (Bands: 1/2/4/5/8)
    • GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

Whether this will be released as one sku or as two different models is unclear at this stage but we will be following up, to clarify.

No Australian pricing was announced, only a re-iteration of the US pricing that was leaked – USD $229 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, USD $269 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model and USD $349 for the 4G LTE Model.

The new Nexus 7 will be on-sale next Tuesday 30th of July in the US and they advised that it will also be available for order in Google Play in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Japan and Korea with more countries coming soon as well.

No Mini SD card expansion? seems a little strange.

Daniel Tyson

Google has disowned microSD Card expansion, the only Nexus device to sport a microSD card slot has been the Nexus One. All subsequent devices have had no expandable memory.

Kermit

So, can we make normal voice calls with it?

Kermit

like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 international LTE version can make phone calls

Dave Weinstein

Are you sure of this? Have you tried it personally or can you confirm your source?

TT

when it will come to australia?

Daniel Tyson

As soon as we get some replies back from Google, Retailers, etc, you can be sure it will be here on Ausdroid.

niknaks

come on “coming soon”, been waiting weeks and still not completely out of the dark. couldn’t they give us a pre-order option or approximate date. Now have to spend the forseeable future constantly checking for any news. why must you u tease us like this. I hope this time round they are prepared to deal with huge demand. its times like this when I envy the apple faithful…..cause of their product launches.

I popped into Officeworks last night on the way home from work. Just… just in case. Of course nothing was there.

$229 and $269??? I thought the leaked pricing was $279?

Have I remembered incorrectly?
Is this a typo and it should be $279?
Or has the price dropped $10 from my remembered leaked pricing?

Daniel Tyson

I based the price off this post, which states the leaked price of $269.99 : http://ausdroid.net/2013/07/18/new-nexus-7-pricing-leaked/

That post is based off the Engadget : http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/17/new-nexus-7-coming/ posts which released retail pricing.

So $0.99 extra for retail, all though the $269 pricewon’t take into account sales tax in the US in all states, nor does it take into account shipping when ordering from Google Play.

Joshua Hill

Thanks for the detailed reply. Guess I must have misread the 32gb price assuming it would be $50 more than the 16gb model.

Harry

Anyone know when this is likely to be available in the shops? I’ve got a JB HiFi giftcard burning a whole in my wallet.

Daniel Tyson

We’re waiting on an announcement from Asus as well as enquiries from all the retailers. So far the answer is : We don’t know yet.

Phill Edwards

Does dualband Wi-Fi mean it will now work with Miracast? Also, does this new one support MHL so you can plug it into a TV HDMI port?

Fred

Slimport – google it.

Fred

Hmm, less than hoped for. If I’m doing the prices right, and if google followed the price increments over the previous model they did before, that would yield Oz prices of 16GB – $279 ($30 increment) 32GB – $319 (only a $20 increment it seems?) LTE – $399 ($50 increment) of course, the exchange rate has changed since last year…. As far as LTE goes, the Telstra bands will be 3,7,8,28 and 3,7,28,40 for Optus. Only some are used as yet. Band 3 seems to be the main one, but 40 is in use in Canberra – thus the Europe… Read more »

Hmm… coming soon to Australia? So i guess that implies not on the 30th… I dunno if I want to wait.. Tempted to order from US and have it forwarded here.

Elliot Kotis

It is available for pre-order in the US now, we will probably have it July 30th.
