Well it looks like Samsung era of domination against Apple could possibly be over if the report from research firm IDC is true.

According to the report, its seems that the era dominated between Samsung and Apple is starting to end, with other Android OEM’s like Sony, HTC, Huawei, LG and ZTE growing their market share by stealing back customers from the two incumbent top players in the mobile phone market.

Strategy Analytics are reporting that LGs market share has risen from 3.7 percent last year to 5.3 per cent in the second quarter of this year, while No.4 ranked Chinese based manufacturer ZTE rose from 3.7 per cent to 5 per cent, with fellow Chinese manufacturer, the No.5 ranked Huawei went from 4.2 per cent to 4.8 per cent.

However there is some difference between Strategy Analytics report and IDC own report which has a slightly different ranking in which Lenovo replacing Huawei in the top five. This shift represents the growth of sales in China, which has for the first time surpassed the United States, to become the biggest smartphone market, and in other developing and emerging markets.

While the report seems to be stating that the lower end market is seeing some changes in ranking of manufacturers, even at the higher end Apple and Samsung are still going to face challenges where their market and current focus lies.

So do you think Samsung era of dominance is truly over or can it stay and continue to grow? Can other OEM’s takeover Samsung?

Its only a matter of time before the flavour of the month phone switches to something else. People got tired of iOS and wanted a change(iphone and 3gs for me), people will get sick of Samsung and touchwiz (as I have.. had s1, s2 and s3) Im with Sony now and will probably stick with them for a while or maybe go for a nexus again.

Its just natural for people to move onto other brands that are more hungry to please consumers with a few risks.

Thats a good thing as dominance causes arrogance.

How can you write a story about Samsung and Apple no longer being dominant in the smartphone market without mentioning their market shares? Who’s to say these companies didn’t steal market share from RIM and Nokia? Given the lack of factual basis in your article, I’m drawing the conclusion that . Exactly.

With the crap that is Samsung, I’m not sad about this. Go Sony and ZTE all the way

What an ignorant comment.

Circle of life I guess

Apple was the top dog, Samsung replicated Apple to become the top dog, but their products are not so great, so after dabbling with the S3, and turning away from the S4, consumers are searching elsewhere.

Competition is great and I’d hate the phone market to just be Apple or Samsung.

Sean Royce

“Consumers are searching elsewhere”??!?! No, they’re not. The S4 has already shipped well in excess of 20 million devices. They’re not going anywhere for now.
