MediaTek is a fairly well known name in the lower end of the smartphone market, but they’re not limited to it, making some headway as makers of one of the first true Octa-Core processors last year. Today they’ve announced another step towards the premium market announcing their latest processor – the MediaTek MT6795.

The MediaTek MT6795 processor is a 64-bit, true Octa-core processor which includes LTE, it also includes native support for LPDDR3 RAM and 2K displays, which we’ve seen through releases such as the Oppo Find 7 and the LG G3, is the coming ‘thing’ in smartphone displays. Clocked at speeds up to 2.2GHz, the MT6795 is looking like a very nice option.

MediaTek intend to release the chip by the end of this year, but at this stage no manufacturers have announced that they will use the processor. As a chip manufacturer, MediaTek does tend to mainly focus on the Asian market, indeed they’re rumoured to be making the processor in the new Android One reference platform announced at Google I/O, which is aimed at developing markets, beginning in India.

MediaTek has had issues with the Open Source community previously, over releasing source code, so whether this potential partnership with Google has incited some changes in policy with the manufacturer we’ll just have to wait and see. Sounds like a decent processor, can’t wait to see what it can do.

I haven’t used a device with a MediaTek chip in it, but recall alot of chatter bagging the performance of chips form MediaTek.
But this is starting to sound a bit like a Hyundai story i.e. the general feeling was that Hyudnai was a poor cousin, but they improved and improved on design and feeatures over the years and ended up with cars that are quite compelling.
Hope that this chipset can bring a good combined LTE chipset at their usual mid range pricing.
