After launching the Xperia Z1 Compact to the approval of many in the tech community, Sony strangely did not follow up with an Xperia Z2 Compact, but fans of phones with flagship specs in a smaller chasis can rest easy, because it appears the Xperia Z3 Compact is readying for a launch at the same time as the full Xperia Z3. Pics of the phone have again shown up to show off for the cameras.

We’ve seen the front panel for the phone previously, and also some purported specs, which had the phone coming with a 4.5″ 720P display, 2.5GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 801 MSM8974-AC processor and 2GB of RAM. This latest update has some changes to those specs though, with the display apparently coming with a 4.6″ 1080p screen and a bump up to 3GB for the RAM.

The front of the phone has seen some shrinking of the seemingly famous Sony bezels around the screen. There’s also appears to be front-facing speakers.

Camera wise, the Xperia Z3 compact should come with the same module they’ve been using in other Xperia Z models – the 20.7MP with G Lens. While we can see the G Lens logo on the rear of the phone, the blurriness of the photo doesn’t allow us to see the rest. A 2.1MP front-facing camera should be on the front as well.

The smaller form factor with premium specs is certainly a much requested form factor in the Android phone landscape, where the name ‘Mini’ has come to be associated with a very much cut down version of the full size version. We should find out more about the Xperia Z3 and the Z3 compact soon as they are expected to be announced at IFA in Germany at the start of September.

Is a 4.6″ screen phone the best screen size for you?

Love my z1 compact. Z3 compact sounds great, but not if overall dimensions have increased. Defeats the purpose if the compact gets any bigger

Hi. I would be very looking forward to a Z3 compact, however for the following reason: to force the price of the Z1 Compact down to a more affordable price, outright. So far the Black Nexus 5(my current phone)at about 419 for the 16GB model, or 440ish for a 32GB model(including shipping)is the most I can usually spend on a flagship. For the extra 100-150 in price over a more low end handset(from some companies)the performance and reliability difference I believe is key for me. That’s my thoughts. By the way, I have the 16GB Black Nexus 5. I do… Read more »

Were stats on number of Z1 Compact’s sold ever released? Critic approval and sales aren’t always related 🙂

Regardless, for those niche buyers (like me!) who want to see small fully featured smart phones, bring on the Z3 Compact!
