As part of the Samsung Unpacked 2 event at IFA in Germany, Samsung has announced not one, but two Galaxy Note devices – the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge.
There were a number of products announced, including the Gear VR head mounted Virtual Reality headset, but the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge were the key products coming from Samsung. Hosted by DJ Lee, the event was mainly presented by Rory O’Neill, Rachel Riley and David Park who showed off the features of the phones.
The Note 4 is an evolution of the Galaxy Note line, continuing to offer the S Pen (which seems to have dropped the hyphen in the name), which will remain an integral part of the Note experience. While the S Pen is definitely useful, you can still use many of the features – like multi-window resizing – with just your finger as well.
The design of the Galaxy Note 4 has undergone a transformation, the Fake leather back remains, but the design has been updated with a curved rear to sit more comfortably in the hand. Samsung describes the Note 4 as the ‘new sleek and stylish Galaxy design language’. This new design language also includes a new material, which we saw introduced recently with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha.
While the rear retains the familiar Note feel, from the front the Note 4 is unmistakably a Samsung Galaxy device. The phone retains the rounded rectangular home button, with a capacitive button either side (Multi-Tasking to the left, Back to the right).
Feature wise, the S Pen remains a key function on both the Note 4 and Note Edge. The S Pen is aimed at precision, as with previous versions of the Galaxy Note, while you can perform most of the functions on a Note with your finger, the S Pen adds more to your experience, as well as being more accurate overall.
The S Pen pressure sensitivity has been doubled, with Samsung advising that the pen can be used like a ‘real pen’. To this end, the S Pen apparently offers a more authentic pen experience, apparently it will emulate a pen with a natural brush effect that makes it feel as though you’re writing on paper. Features introduced on the Note 3 like Air Command, will also make a return.
The hardware between the Note 4 and the Note Edge is mainly differentiated by the curved display on the Note Edge which will allow you to access frequently used apps, alerts and device functionality even when you have a flip cover on the phone. There will be slightly more hardware options on the Note Edge models, with a 32GB option for the Note 4 and a 32/64GB option for the Note Edge.
The screen on the Note 4 and Note Edge will be a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED (2560 x 1440) display, with the Note Edge including an extra 160 pixels on the side edge display. The Super AMOLED technology is the same as that introduced on the Galaxy Tab S tablets, with a super accurate 90% RGB Adobe colour range reproduction.

Accesories wise, the Note 4 will again come with an S View cover and Flip cover but will introduce an ‘LED cover’ which certainly is reminiscent of the HTC Dot View case.
The big question is of course when they will be available. The Note 4 will be available in October in Charcoal Black, Frost White, Bronze Gold and Blossom Pink. The Galaxy Note Edge will be available in Charcoal Black and Frost White in what Samsung say is selected markets later this year.
Samsung Australia advised that with regards to their availability here :
Samsung Electronics Australia can confirm that the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and Gear VR will be launching in Australia later this year. We will confirm local pricing and availability for each product closer to local launch.
The note edge…looks like a gimmick to me…it’s good for Sammy to use the new tech, but i don’t think it worths changing the Android UI by just adding the edge side bar for the shortcuts. it will be so busy on the right side…
So getting the note 4 edge when it comes here hopefully Vodafone gets it otherwise it’s outright for me
Great.. I wanted to have a 64gb note 4, but I didn’t want some crappy screen gimmick.
*sigh* …Shut up and take my money….
