Well, there’s always some lapse in secrecy surrounding the development of devices, this time it’s the Nexus 9 and it’s some legal documents which have spilled the beans.
Earlier this month, chip-maker Nvidia, brought legal action agains competitors Samsung and Qualcomm, claiming they are using technology in their GPUs without paying royalties to NVidia. It’s in the documents for this case, that BrightSideOfNews found a reference to the Nexus 9, with NVidia outing the name, manufacturer and release window as well as confirming it will be powered by the Tegra K1. Nvidia references the Nexus 9 in the documents, stating that :
the HTC Nexus 9, expected in the third quarter of 2014, is also expected to use the Tegra K1.
So, a HTC made, Nexus 9, powered by the NVidia Tegra K1 is coming in the third quarter of 2014…that’s by the end of this month – quite a bit of exciting news if true. It is of course possible that time frames have slipped, but it would be nice to see a new Nexus tablet from Google sooner rather than later given it’s been over a year since Google announced the Nexus 7 (2013).
Will we see a Nexus 9 released this month, or will it be held over for an October/November announcement with a new Nexus phone?
3rd quarter for Nvidia’s financial year, not calendar year.
3rd quarter ends 31 October.
Where does it say “financial year”?!
it’s a legal document, it’s financial year unless otherwise stated
since when does a legal document automatically refer to a financial year unless otherwise stated? what a nonsense.
Probably down to semantics but they’ll generally talk in terms of their financial reporting period, in which case Andrew is correct, their 3rd quarter ends end of October.
You can see their 1st quarter results here: http://nvidianews.nvidia.com/News/NVIDIA-Financial-Results-for-First-Quarter-Fiscal-2015-b1c.aspx
Also, NVIDIA’s press release regarding this complaint: http://nvidianews.nvidia.com/News/NVIDIA-Files-Complaints-Against-Samsung-and-Qualcomm-for-Infringing-Its-GPU-Patents-bb4.aspx
Nvidia is well known for talking about dates in terms of their financial year. Happens all the time with their desktop gpu releases.
There were rumours going around a few weeks ago suggesting that the next Nexus phone would be released earlier than in previous years. Is anyone else thinking that we might see a combined launch of the HTC Nexus 9 and the Motorola Nexus in the next 3-4 weeks? Or is that a case of wishful thinking?
How old are these documents though? I thought LMP was not expected until later this year.
News came out about the case on the 4th of September
I suspect given how flaky kit kat was for some users at launch Google could launch Android L tomorrow and it would be a more successful launch than kit kat was.
