LG has had a pretty close relationship with Qualcomm recently, their last three high-end G Series phones were all powered by Snapdragon processors. But that could soon be a thing of the past, with LG today announcing their first first mobile application processor (AP) – NUCLUN.
Pronounced NOO-klun, the processor is a big.LITTLE ARM based Octa-Core processor with four Cortex-A15 1.5GHz cores and four Cortex-A7 1.2GHz cores. The processor will also be fully functional on CAT 6 LTE networks, offering maximum download speeds of 225Mbps, as well as being backwards compatible with older LTE networks.
While we won’t be seeing NUCLUN in any phones in our neck of the woods any time soon, LG has announced that the processor will be used in a phone called the G3 Screen, which will be released in Korea. The specs for the phone are pretty decent, mirroring the Snapdragon based LG G3 released here in Australia, but with more storage (still with 2GB RAM though).
G3 Screen Specifications:
- Chipset: NUCLUN Octa-Core (1.5GHz Quad-Core +1.2GHz Quad-Core)
- Display: 5.9-inch Full HD IPS
- Memory: 32GB eMMC / 2GB RAM / MicroSD slot

Just an interesting tidbit, we’ll have to see what LG has planned for the LG G4 announcement, perhaps we’ll see a Nuclun based phone released in western markets next year.
