In case you missed it Samsung announced the new Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge this morning. In that announcement they also mentioned that wireless charging will be included by default for the first time in a Samsung Galaxy phone. The Samsung flagship phones support both WPC (Wireless Power Consortium – Qi) and PMA (Power Matters Alliance) which is a first. With this, wireless charging may have finally arrived for the masses meaning more innovation and options in the wireless charging realm. in keeping with this, IKEA are bringing wireless charging to the mainstream by inserting it into a new line of furniture.
IKEA today announced a new product line of Qi-powered bedside tables, lamps and desks. Using the Qi charging format any supported device can be charged by just placing on the designated spot on the furniture (assuming the furniture has a power source). WPC chairman, Menno Treffers, stated the following:
IKEA is delivering on its vision of making life at home better with this innovative, stylish and useful new collection that show consumers the beauty and simplicity of wireless charging. We applaud IKEA for its unmatched insight and their unique passion for making wireless charging affordable and simple for consumers.
IKEA said the wireless charging home furnishings will be available in Europe and North America this April, followed by a global rollout. We are yet to hear of any Australian availability but we will let you know as soon as we do.
Do you have any concerns regarding the built in Qi charging? Do you wonder if the Qi charging plate could be replaced if something went wrong with it? Can you see yourself buying Qi charging furniture? Myself, if IKEA were looking for someone to review a Qi bedside table I’d be the first to put their hand up.
Any update on when this is likely to reach Australia. I would be keen for a bedside table with this. 🙂
If like it to be introduced into office furniture first…
Flat packed with visual instructions… I could go for this! 😉
don’t forget the allen key and the 3 screws left over at the end!
Better 3 screws too many than 3 not enough! I do have quite the collection of allen keys thanks to Ikea though 🙂
