Anzac Day 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey. Google has placed the Doodle you see above on the Google.com.au homepage today and they’ve also added some features to Google maps.
April 25th is commemorated every year in Australia, New Zealand and even Turkey. It’s a day which is not a celebration, nor a day which glorifies war, it is rather a day to remember, and reflect on the fallen and those who defended and continue to defend our country, some of whom gave their lives.
Gallipoli holds a special place for Australians and New Zealanders, many of whom learn about the location in school through text books. Google, with Maps has added something a little more this year, allowing everyone to visit more than 80 of Gallipoli’s historic sites online.

Google has also added more than a hundred unique photos, documents and artifacts to the Google Cultural Institute website for you to explore. Exhibits in the online exhibition include ‘images of the shipwreck of the AE2 submarine, the drawings of Captain Hore, and paintings by Australian artist George Lambert’.
Google has approached this project carefully and tastefully, working with a number of agencies on this project, agencies such as the ‘General Directorate for the Historical Sites of Gallipoli and Dardanelles Battles of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and the Embassies of Australia and New Zealand’. The imagery and maps are all online for you to view, so check them out and remember.
