One of the major drawbacks of Chromebooks, well basically any ChromeOS device in a corporate environment has been lack of access to one of the most popular VOIP and chat clients in those environments: Skype. But as of today, that’s no longer an issue, with Skype’s new web app now working across the web on devices including Chromebooks.
Now Chromebooks also includes Chromebases, Chromeboxes, and we hope ChromeBits once released, and all you need to do is go to the web.skype.com webpage. You will of course need your Outlook/Skype login credentials, but it’s as easy that.
The web app itself isn’t new, Microsoft actually debuted it a couple of weeks back, but it was restricted to US/UK users only. Today’s development means users anywhere can now access the handy tool.
Users have until now been using hacked together Android APKs to access Skype, but as they say, your mileage may vary when it came to using these ChromeAPKs. This official tool, should make a rather large, positive difference in a number of ChromeOS users lives, though it is important to note that, for the time being, Skype on Chrome only supports instant messaging (IM); video and voice support is not as yet available.

Kinda missing a massive part of the story. There’s is no video or voice on Chromebooks. IM only. Maybe try something instead of rehashing the press release.

I have been waiting for this for so long as it’s hard to get my parents to use hangouts. Can’t wait to give it a whirl.
