Prior to the launch of the OnePlus One, the company took great pleasure in slowly releasing details of the hardware that would launch in their phone. It seems we may be set to see a repeat of this tactic, with OnePlus again taking specs for the OnePlus 2 which is due in Q3 this year.

Co-Founder Carl Pei has previously announced that the phone will use a Snapdragon 810 processor, but after continual reports of issues with the processor, OnePlus has begun addressing that before the launch. OnePlus will reportedly use v2.1 of the Snapdragon 810 processor, a processor which they say has the ‘speed and ability to multitask while maintaining optimal battery performance remain unmatched amongst others in the industry’.

The Snapdragon 810 will be heavily utilised by OnePlus to power many of the features of the ‘2’ as they refer to it, giving better video, a faster camera and ‘unbelievable gaming experience’.

The issue of overheating is addressed, with OnePlus saying that they have worked with Qualcomm engineers on the v2.1 Snapdragon 810 to make sure the chip runs ‘cooler than ever’. Fixes also include using thermal gel and graphite coolers used to dissipate heat evenly across the handset, all of which means the handset ‘meets the industry standard for phone temperature, even with hours of use’.

OnePlus will also optimise the OxygenOS ROM that will run on the 2, with software targeting specific processes to individual processor cores.

For example, one or two of the larger processors would be used for graphics-heavy gaming, while in contrast, the small processor would be used for simple text messaging. In layman’s terms, one of our ROM’s features is to intuitively know which processor should be used for what task, and it avoids using two or more processors that are right next to each other.

When we spoke to Carl at Google I/O, he wouldn’t be drawn on an exact release date for the phone, simply re-iterating the previous Quarter 3 window which begins in July. We’re looking forward to seeing the second generation of the OnePlus and hope we can get some early invites to purchase their latest and greatest when it launches.

Mr Pei’s optimism notwithstanding, I sincerely doubt they can outperform, in terms of efficiency, 14nm parts like the Exynos 7420 with the Snapdragon 810 at 20nm.

If the exynos is really that good then Samsung should be ashamed of their software engineers.
