Google’s 3D imaging effort Project Tango has received a shot in the arm, with an additional hardware partner coming onboard. At their Developer Forum in San Francisco, chip-maker Intel has announced that they will be launching a Project Tango developer platform which utilises their RealSense 3D camera technology.
First introduced on the Dell Venue 8 7000 tablet launched in Australia earlier this year, the technology will give developers the opportunity to further the Project Tango 3D mapping technology. Engadget has published shots of the phone which includes a 6″ screen which has ‘a slew of cameras on the rear’.
This makes the second Project Tango phone announced this year, after Qualcomm announced their handset at Google I/O. Project Tango is still very much a developer focused platform, though almost anyone can buy a Project Tango tablet in the US for USD$512 and it will also be coming to more countries later this month.
Google showed off practical demonstrations of Project Tango using Gaming at Google I/O this year, but it’s still very much a technology in progress.
Intel has advised that their ‘developer kit is targeted for release to select Android developers by the end of this year’ we look forward to seeing what they can do with it.
