At this stage, the expected Sony Xperia Z5 series of phones must be close to the most leaked device in recent times. Today more Z5 images have apparently broken cover, this time in the form of manufacturing “props” used by 3rd party manufacturers to test accessories.

The images continue to be consistent with previous leaks of the Xperia Z5 series, including a changed layout for the hardware buttons with a slightly lower power and volume rocker. The Power button is rumoured to contain a fingerprint sensor, though in this hardware mockup there’s nothing to glean on that front. The microUSB port is definitely not a USB-C connector if anyone was still holding out hope for that.

There is no strong evidence for any of the internal specs at this stage, however, the consistency of the external leaks strongly suggest the this is close to the final form for the new Xperia Z5 line. While no evidence exists for hardware specs, there are of course rumours on that front. If the rumors are to be believed, it appears that we may be seeing 3 variants of the Xperia Z5, a compact, a ‘standard’ and a Plus. Hardware rumours for the Xperia Z5 include:

  • Snapdragon 810 processor
  • 3 – 4 GB of RAM
  • Fingerprint reader
  • Micro SD card
  • Two-day battery life – using Sony’s “stamina mode”
  • QHD (2K) display – on the plus model
  • Stereo front facing speakers

If the rumors of three size variants are true this will be the first time that Sony have released their Xperia Z line with three size options in the same line-up. With the trend in mobile phone sizes tending to be larger and larger, Sony could differentiate themselves by offering the Xperia Z5 in multiple sizes with no – or few – compromises in important specifications between the size variants.

This is something no OEM seems to have gotten right with different sizes of the “same phone” traditionally having different specifications – not including the screen/ resolution obviously – where it counts. The Sony Z1 and Z3 compact were well received for offering basically the same phone and experience as its larger variant without significantly downgrading the overall specs of the device. Could Sony pull a flagship hat-trick out of the bag at IFA in berlin this September? We will let you know with  Ausdroid’s own Dan Tyson and Jason Murray covering IFA live from the show floor so stay tuned for out live coverage.

Are you interesting is seeing a high-end smartphone offered in three size choices without major compromises between the models? Let us know in the comments.

if the battery life is really two days this is a serious contender.

I’m hoping that the z5 will have a FHD screen rather than 2K which I think is an overkill. However a good idea to release z5+ with 2K screen to give consumers options.
