We’ve been following the arrival of the Moto X Style and Moto X Play since they were announced by Motorola last month, and while there’s been a minor delay in getting the product to shelves, we can confirm that Vodafone will have stock of both handsets on sale tomorrow, and we’ve got the confirmed plan pricing here for you as well.
For the flagship of the group, the Moto X Style (32GB), the handset will premier on the $80 Red plan, with a $3 charge per month for the handset (over 24 months). The Moto X Style will also be available on the following plans, for the following handset costs:
- $40 Red Plan + $15 per month
- $60 Red Plan + $14 per month
- $100 Red Plan + $3 per month
- $130 Red Plan + $0 per month
The Moto X Play (16GB) is not pegged as a flagship, though it certainly gives many of them a run for their money. The hero plan there is the $60 plan for $3 per month, but it will also be available on the $40 plan for $5 per month, and $80 plan (and above) for no extra payment.
For those who don’t wish to recommit to a 24 month contract, or who are on a SIM-only plan, the handsets are also available on variable Mobile Payment Plans. The Moto X Play is $22 per month and the Moto X Style is $33 per month (over a 24 month contract), bringing the total cost for each to $528 for the Moto X Play (which is also the outright price) and $792 for the Moto X Style (again, likely to be available outright, but not confirmed in the info we have). MPPs are also available on 6 and 12 month repayment plans, to give you a bit more flexibility in payment (36 months will soon be an option, too)
There’s not much more to confirm now … so, get yourself into a Vodafone store tomorrow (those in CBD locations will probably have the most stock available) and check out these two handsets. I have a feeling you’ll love them.
I mean … stock Android, great battery life, great design … what’s not to love? I know, we’ve heard your feedback that the pricing could be a little more competitive, but it is what it is for the time being.
Just called Vodafone in Belmont, WA. He told me the phones will be in later today or tomorrow and I can pre-order one if I like, however they won’t be selling them outright so I’ll need to get one on a plan.
I just checked out the Vodafone store at Souther Cross station here in Melbourne. They didn’t even have any handsets on display. I asked the guy and he gave me a confused look. He asks another guy there and he pulls out a dummy modem under the drawer -________-.
Anyways it was the Play model. Looks good.
Maybe the correct approach to get one is the “psst” approach?
If that fails, you might have more luck getting a bag of weed that way instead 😀
The Moto x style is now the most useless unlocked phone. No point having it unlocked if you cant buy it outright and need to be on a Vodafone plan.
I honestly think it’s easier to get a Oneplus Two for which you need an invite before you can buy it, and the only way to get it to Australia is via a shipping forwarder in Europe or US.
Waiting for the nexus announcements now.
Looks like I will have to as well, or consider getting one in Malaysia next month without all this hassle and Vodafone tax.
If in Sydney don’t waste your time in the 3 CBD stores. None have stock. The QVB store has Plays in stock but was adamant that there would be no outright sales for either phone.
I’m very disappointed.
Too early in the morning. Delivery truck hasn’t arrived. May arrive late this afternoon. Keep calling the fcukers.
I did call them in the morning but the south east Asian call centre I got through to after negotiating a frustrating robot system, couldn’t tell me about stock, nor connect me to a store or give me a number for a store.
They did enthusiastically suggest that I could pre order an iPhone instead though. How nice. :/
Just went to the Vodafone on the corner of Swanson and Bourke St in Melbourne and they seem just add confused as we are as to when it will arrive. They thought it was due in today but hadn’t received anything yet. This is very disappointing
As of now (9:37am Adelaide time) the Vadafone website still has not been updated to show any Motorola products as far as I can see. I also signed up a few days ago with Motorola Australia to receive updates about the phones but am yet to get any emails yet today from them. I wonder what is going on with their marketing and delivery of these phones here in Australia? Doing a google search for the products it would seem India got the X Play on the 14th which may have been why Australia was delayed and it would seem… Read more »
$792 outright is stupid. It’s a great phone but you can get the G4 for cheaper which gives better low light camera performance and battery performance if the online comparisons are anything to go by. Shame on you Vodafone and Motorola.
Especially given that you can grab the G4 for $499 from Kogan with the eBay group buy. It makes the Play in particular a rip off!
Went into Voda store on George St today. Was told the Style is $792 outright, but they won’t sell it outright! Bloody ridiculous, and I must say I’m not sure how they can get away with such anti-competitive behaviour. Exclusive supplier of a product, and you can’t buy it unless you go on a credit contract? I can only hope Motorola decides to sell direct on their website. PS. I did work out that you can sign up for a $30 month to month plan for one month, and take the handset on one monthly payment of $792, so total… Read more »
That’s still daylight robbery considering that they already have a markup of about $160 based on the price they are paying on the motomaker site in the US!
I just went to the Vodafone store in George Street and they don’t have stock. I left my number for when they get a delivery. No denial of an outright sale which I made clear was what I wanted.
I guess it matters who you talk to?
I don’t think so. I spoke to two staff and then the manager. I went into the Pitt St Mall / Westfield store this morning, he said the Play is going on sale today and the Style tomorrow, but wouldn’t give any more information. Didn’t seem to know what was going on. Nothing on Moto or Voda websites. Ridic.
I’m very confused about the phone repayment difference between the $40 and $60 plans. Surely the repayments should be lower on the $60 plan rather than 1-3 measley bucks…
dare I ask if you have any new information on the Moto 360?
Not yet, we’re trying. I’d say November/December for local launch if we’re lucky.
that bites
Not sure about battery life, read reviews which state battery life is average
Reports on XDA seem to confirm this, 3 hours of Screen on Time is concerning
I just left the Vodafail store on the corner of Bourke & Swanston in Melbourne and the guy said they will have the phone in on Thursday (16/09) and not tomorrow. Also they don’t sell phones outright. 🙁
Someone on Whirlpool was also told by a local Voda store that they won’t sell the Play outright. They want to get people to commit to contracts rather than clear out their stock.
That’s stupid on Motorola’s part if this turns out to be the case as they will lose sales as a lot of people won’t want to go on a contract with Voda.
Will they make more money on outright sale than contract?
They already have a huge markup based on the US$ price in motomaker.
If that is the case, I’ll try my luck in Malaysia next month. It will probably be $150 or so cheaper there anyway.
I dropped into my local Vodafone store after work today and was told I can get the X Play for $528 outright tomorrow. I left my number and they said they will call me in the morning to collect. Only time will tell.
Hope there is some good news going around tomorrow then. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
No stock in HOBART City store this morning. Said it will be announced and delivered today?
I dropped in to my local store and they first feigned ignorance, then said they will probably have a delivery tomorrow afternoon. That’s a bit lame for a flagship release.
I went in thinking they might have a stash out the back, ready to go on display in the morning. And then I thought maybe I could convince them to do a quick, early sale.
Alas, it appears there is zero hype from Motorola in Australia.
The bloke I spoke to said something similar too but I suspect they already have stock as he said Motorola delayed the release due to the new iPhone announcement which sort of makes sense.
You’d be stupid to commit to Moto X until the Google Nexus announcement/pricing on 1 Oct 2015.
And wait 3 months to actually get your hands on one? No thanks.
And wait 3+ months to actually get your hands on Marshmallow and Nutella OS updates for Moto X? No thanks.
Spoke to a Vodafone store today- they’ve advised that the Moto X Style won’t be available outright- only available on Plan or MPP. Which is really crap for someone like me as I work for and have a staff plan with another carrier!
That’s quite disappointing!! We’ll look into this.
That’d be great- would be good to get an official response from Voda as to whether this is true or whether store staff are holding stock for plan purchases.
Okay. I can relax now.
I can wait to hear about the Nexuses, wait to see if the Style turns up on an online store.
Is the 36 month option not out yet? Speaking to the red care team and they know “nothing” about it
Just to update on this, from what I can gather, they have all the information internally, but can’t talk about it until tomorrow. I said, just tell me that, because it makes it sound like you have no idea what you’re talking about.
36 month option is for MPP, not for plan contracts (though, functionally, they’re similar), and yes, while most Vodafone people will have this info, it doesn’t go live until tomorrow, so they won’t talk about it today.
Apparently, the Play doesn’t have an operational notification light out of the box. Rooting and installing a custom kernel activates the white notifcation light, even if you return it to stock firmware (odd, but that’s what has been reported on xda). I expect a RGB light for $528…it’s not the Moto E or G afterall.
If it’s not in use on the stock software, why would they include an RGB? I’m confused why they included a white one to be honest. Moto Display replaces them anyway, which is likely why they didn’t include an RGB LED.
What no 32gb model of the Play? 🙁 Surely not!
I guess now that you point that out it could be the reason why it is $528 and not $569.
The Motorola website does suggest they may be releasing both a 16 and a 32gb version in Australia so maybe the 32 might be sold later or elsewhere in stores?
Great news Chris but still no mention on Vodafone’s website. However a phone of fruit variety is front and centre on their website for pre-order but not available until 25 Sept. I honestly don’t know how Motorola expect to sell many of their devices with marketing (or lack thereof) like this…
If the Play is really going to be $528 outright it is not exactly cheap but I think it is a little lower than predicted (I think $560+). It would be nice if you know about the G too as I am not sure if I want/need to spend this much to get still a great phone with most of the advantages.
We know the Moto G pricing but not when and where it’ll go on sale. Likely tomorrow but you’re right… Moto has been a bit quiet.
I think the RRP for Moto X Play was meant to be $569 from memory, so if the play is being sold for $528, theres a good chance Moto G will be cheaper in retail than RRP too 🙂
