Qualcomm has today announced the next iteration of their popular Quick Charge fast charging standard, Quick Charge 3.0. Qualcomm says that the updated version of Quick charge is capable of charging a ‘typical smartphone’ from 0 to 80% in just 35 minutes. The new standard is capable of not only charging faster but also of reducing ‘loss’ during the charging process.
Qualcomm attributes these improvements to the development of a new charging technology, Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV). INOV allows devices to actively request the correct voltage it requires to achieve optimum charging speeds. In addition, the new INOV spec in 3.0 allows for incremental voltage regulation between 3.6 to 20v, a massive improvement over Quick Charge 2.0’s set voltages of 5V, 9V, 12V and 20V. Qualcomm touts that it is the combination of these two changes that combine to provide the improvements ins speed and efficiency.
Qualcomm has advised that Quick Charge 3.0 compliant SOC processors include Snapdragon 820, 620, 618, 617 and 430. Devices incorporating Quick Charge 3.0 are expected by early 2016. Devices with 3.0 will be backward compatible with the older quick charge standards.
Fast charging is rapidly becoming popular, not entirely coincidently with shrinking phone thickness and battery capacity by some OEMs, so it is good to see Qualcomm continue to develop the standard. With mobile devices becoming more powerful and incorporating ever larger screen sizes and resolutions continued innovation in the battery/ charging space is definitely needed.

With smaller batteries that are non removable phones won’t last a year. Not ideal
