While there’s little surprise who holds the #1 and #2 spots in the Australian mobile phone market, the next few positions are in hot contention and Alcatel OneTouch announced yesterday that – in terms of units shipped to carriers – they’ve secured the #3 spot for the third quarter of 2015, according to an IDC report.
Proving that you should never underestimate heading into the prepaid market at an attractive pricepoint, Alcatel OneTouch found success in the third quarter with the launch of various flavours of the Pixi 3 (in 4.0- and 4.5-inch sizes on Optus and Telstra respectively), the Pop 2 4G on Vodafone, and we’ve mentioned the $99 Quatro 4G (available on Boost) before. These phones are all in carrier stores and their online sales sites now.
It’s a great comeback for the company that after previously exiting the Australian market has clawed back its reputation though smart decisions bringing low cost devices to market both through retail sales and carrier-branded handsets. The company won’t be resting on its laurels this quarter either, with a few new devices making their way to Australia in Q4 and in 2016.
The company’s strategy – bringing products that embody their core values of accessibility, affordability, creativity and fun – will also see the introduction of the Idol 3 in the coming weeks at an attractive $379 price point. Dan liked what he saw when he reviewed the Idol 3, and it’s an attractive option this Christmas. We’ll also be taking a look at the Quatro 4G in the next few days.
