Google is a search company, they aggregate a lot of data and at this time of year they take the time to collate that data and let us see the trends through search in the year that was.
In 2015, there was a strong trend towards looking at current events with topics like the French massacre and the Syrian refugee crisis, as well as other topics like the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in favour of marriage equality and even the new Star Wars movie. The biggest search occurred last month with 897 million+ requests for information on the Paris Attacks, followed by the 87th Academy Awards with 406 million+ searches and the Cricket World Cup with 323 million+ searches. Google has broken the search trends down into a 2-minute video which shows what the popular searches have been across the world, and then invited people to check the top searches in various categories.
Worldwide, the top 10 searches were a mix of current events, people and pop culture, including :
- Lamar Odom
- Jurassic World
- American Sniper
- Caitlyn Jenner
- Ronda Rousey
- Paris
- Agar.io
- Chris Kyle
- Fallout 4
- Straight Outta Compton
For Australia, the top searches included Jarryd Hayne, Malcolm Turnbull, Ivan Milat, Phil Walsh and Peter Allen.
