Until now, Samsung has reserved its Galaxy name for Android devices, but that ends today with the Korean giant unveiling the Galaxy TabPro S, shown above, a giant prosumer tablet powered by Windows 10. By integrating the most popular features of tablets and laptops, Samsung things its onto a winning formula, with a full notebook PC functionality in a lightweight tablet design.
This is a segment of the market that’s growing quickly; Microsoft’s Surface range is leading the segment, and Google is getting in on the action with its recently released Pixel C. Samsung’s Dongjin Ko, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business says of the Galaxy TabPro S:
“Galaxy TabPro S balances the best of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab with the wealth of features on the Windows 10 operating system for the most advanced tablet experience on the market. We’re thrilled to be working with Microsoft Corp. to deliver a 2-in-1 tablet that truly allows people to enjoy productivity and connections that matter most, through a seamless mobile station designed for all purposes.”
The tablet measures just 6.3mm thick, and weighs in at just 693 grams, making it designed to be carried all day. A full-sized keyboard cover, which comes included with the device (a departure from the Surface and Pixel C, where they’re optional extras) enhances the usability of the tablet. It has a flexible hinge, which enables optimal, dual-angle viewing for clear display regardless of whether you’re working at a desk, on the go, or on a flight.
Better yet, the keyboard cover incorporates a trackpad area, so there’s no awkward type-then-poke movement needed to interact with the tablet; with the keyboard case attached, it functions the same way as a laptop, something that many users will welcome.
The Galaxy TabPro S 12 is a powerful unit, incorporating both Windows 10, LTE Cat 6 connectivity, and a battery that can charge in 2.5 hours to deliver 10.5 hours of on the go use.
As you can see from the full specs above, the Galaxy TabPro S is quite a powerful device, and while it isn’t an Android device, it will undoubtedly be a popular new entrant to the mobile productivity crossover market.
I’m all for Samsung making these devices, but calling them Galaxy is going to confuse people as EVERYONE has it in their brain that Galaxy is their Android line…
Actually everyone knows Galaxy as a Samsung brand, the OS isn’t such a big issue. It may be a little confusing to some but they are moving Galaxy away from being tied to Android. I suspect they will probably start announcing some Tizen galaxy devices in the near future.
Just make a laptop with touch and use AMOLED screen, will buy it by taking a loan ;p
What processor does it have?
Intel Core M 6th Gen.
Yeah we only know what’s in Samsung’s press imagery at the moment. We’ll find out more when we can.
