gear 360

Samsung has filed a trademark application for “Gear 360” in its home of South Korea, suggesting the launch of a 360º virtual reality camera might not be far away. The application filed refers to photography and cameras as the primary product categories, and the 360 reference may well refer to a round design supporting new virtual reality applications. Of course, being a trademark application, there’s next to no further information about this at all, but that doesn’t mean we can’t begin speculating.

Late 2014, so getting on to twelve months ago now, Samsung showcased Project Beyond (pictured above) which also appeared at last year’s CES. It doesn’t seem there’s any reference to this product this year, but with Samsung’s continued focus on Gear VR, a 360º camera does make some sense for the company.

Given CES is all but finished at it hasn’t made an appearance, there’s every chance that a Gear 360 product could arrive at Mobile World Congress next month, or at an earlier event predicted for Samsung’s Galaxy S7. Either way, if it shows up, we’ll let you know!
