Unicode 9 Emoji
With Google recently adding in the latest emoji from Unicode 8 which was released in June last year, it’s time to look forward to what the Unicode Consortium has in store for emoji next. Unicode 9.0 includes over 70 new emoji and is due to be released mid-year.

There’s a bunch of new emoji, but given that 2016 is an Olympics year it’s interesting to note that there are a few nice sports emoji in here representing activities we normally only see once every four years – sports such as the Modern Pentathlon, Boxing Glove, Fencing, Water Polo, Wrestlers, rifle, Handball, Martial Arts uniform and of course the First, second and Third Place Medals.

It’s not all about sports though, foodies will be pleased to see a heap of new foods being added, from the simple potato to the king of foods: Bacon. There’s also a few gestures (Raised Back of Hand? Left-Facing Fist?).

Emojipedia has put together a list of the emoji that are included in the UniCode 9.0 spec, and if you go to their site they have images of what the emoji will look like. The full list of emoji in the update will include:

Whether these new emoji make it into Android N isn’t certain, emoji from UniCode 8.0 got released in mid-2015 and it took an update to Android 6.0.1 to get the new emoji in there. Still, it would be good to see Google include it in the initial release as a convenience to users.

Which of these new emoji would you have a use for?

I wish I could limit it massively. Choose all the ones I don’t want. It’s a pain trying to find the few useful ones.
That would be a nice option to have. Other ones sent to you would still show up.

That would be handy. In the meantime, Swiftkey remembers which emoji you used, and puts them at the top. Not sure if other keyboards to the same.

I just want them to catch up to iPhone. I’m often seeing the dreaded “box with cross” because Android doesn’t support all the emoji that iPhone does.

And I wish they would fix the smile face switching to a blushing face emoji.
