LG to unveil two further phones at MWC 2016, from the ‘X Series’

LG has today announced that it will unveil not one, but at least three phones at its press conference in Barcelona next week, with the announcement of the new X Series. Two new phones from this X Series include the X cam with dual rear camera and the X screen which features an LG V10-style second screen.

The phones, decided aimed at the mid-range, are designed “for customers who do not want or need all the bells and whistles that come with today’s high-end phones”, says LG, but they do borrow features from the high-end devices.

The X cam features two rear cameras, one at 13MP and the other at 5MP. How these two cameras actually work together is yet to be seen, but the phone itself sports a decent 5.2″ 1080p display, with 16GB on-board storage and 2GB of RAM. Packing a 2,520mAh battery, the X cam will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, becoming one of the first mid-range handsets to do so.

The X screen, on the other hand, is a 5″ phone (well slightly under) at 720p, with a secondary 1.76″ display atop the primary display, much like LG’s V10 (which hasn’t been released here). Other options are largely in line with the X cam, with 16GB / 2GB for storage and RAM, a slightly smaller 2,300 mAh battery, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow too. Camera-wise, the rear camera is a single 13MP shooter, with 8MP on the front.

Without having seen or used these phones, the 2GB RAM and 16GB on-board storage could be a bit limiting, but equally, these are squarely in keeping with other mid-range handsets.  That the X screen has a somewhat lower resolution, smaller screen than on the X cam is a little puzzling. Still, LG found its early success in the lower to mid-range, and these new X Series handsets could be a strong return to LG’s smart-mobile roots.

These new phones will reportedly launch in Asia, Europe and Latin America from next month, and we’re told that we’ll be able to go hands-on with these devices at MWC 2016 next week in Barcelona.
