While we are desperately waiting for news on the LG G5, LG has whet our appetite with news about a different phone which they’ve just launched overseas. The wraps have come off the LG Stylus DAB+ in Paris today, and the hook here is that it’s the first mobile phone with a built in DAB+ digital tuner. In use in more than 40 countries, and with more than 50 million people able to receive DAB+ broadcasts, the phone is sure to be a hit in the mid-range, allowing users a digital-quality audio experience without having to pay for data to stream internet radio.

Gino Casha, General Manager, Mobile Communications at LG Australia commented:

The LG Stylus DAB+shows our commitment to meeting the different needs of the consumer. We have developed a piece of technology that gives a hassle-free digital radio experience, so consumers are able to listen to select radio stations simply and without incurring costly data usage charges. The device is ideal for many consumers as it provides premium functions at the price of a mid-tier phone.

For the size conscious, the LG Stylus DAB+ is only 7.4mm thin and weighs 145g. The handset delivers a unique design statement and high end features such as a 3,000mAh removable battery, a SD card slot to allow users to expand storage and a gorgeous 5.7-inch screen on which to enjoy a variety of content.

All consumers need to do to enable the digital radio feature on the Stylus, is plug in the included headset and click on the DAB+ icon that starts a scan of the local DAB+ radio stations in the area*. They will then be able to select from the list of available radio stations and save their favourite stations for easy access in future.

We don’t have local availability or pricing just yet, except that we know it’s coming. When we have more information from LG, we’ll be in touch again with updates and a review — we can’t wait to try DAB+ on a mobile phone. It’s certainly a unique selling point. Until then, here’s some key specs:

  • Display: 5.7-inch HD In-Cell Touch (1280 x 720)
  • Chipset: 1.2GHz Quad-Core
  • Camera: Rear 13MP / Front 8MP
  • Memory: 2GB LPDDR3 RAM / 16GB ROM / MicroSD
  • Battery: 3,000mAh (removable)
  • Operating System: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Size: 155 x 79.6 x 7.4mm
  • Weight: 145g
  • Network: LTE / HSPA+ / GSM
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n / Bluetooth 4.1 / USB 2.0

I feel like the fun police but in Australia DAB+ is only in capital cities… even 7 years after launch.

I was going to say the same thing.

Oh happy day! Just hope the marshmallow isn’t gimped like samsung and I can use the permanent sd card expansion. Will happily buy this unlocked from any country… And a pen too.

Samsung and LG you mean – they also left adoptable storage out of the G5.

Joshua King

Thanks. Will need a third party rom then I guess. Guess what that will mean though – most likely a loss of dab+ and being a niche handset… Will see what happens.

MoDaCo has a no root solution to enable adoptable storage on the stock ROM of the S7 using ADB, maybe there’s something similar for LG ROM’s.

Same trick will probably work.
