Google I/O next week will have a strong focus on Virtual Reality, we already knew that from the list of sessions on the Google I/O 2016 event schedule. Yesterday gadget blog entrepeneur Peter Rojas stirred things up announcing Google would announce a new standalone headset called Android VR at the event, now this morning developers are seeing an Android VR icon in their developer console.
There’s no further information about the Android VR platform, headset or whatever it’s going to be – but it’s looking pretty legit from the developer console – if you have a developer account you can check it out yourself. Unlike the icons for Android Wear, Android TV and Android Auto, the link below the icon is a blank JavaScript link, but obviously that will change next week.
The ‘leak’ yesterday referred to a more powerful VR headset than the Samsung Gear VR, but not as powerful as the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift – though as a mobile powered platform that it’s rumoured to be, that’s understandable.
We can’t wait for Google I/O, Ausdroid will be covering the event live from on the ground in Mountain View and from back here at home. Stay tuned, it’s going to get exciting.
