Samsung’s upcoming new Note series phone is due to be announced later this year, with a new report advising that Samsung intends to both announce and release the phone on the 2nd of August.

According to Korean IT news site etnews, Samsung is ramping up production of the new Galaxy Note, which is apparently going to launch as the Galaxy Note 7 to bring the series in line with the Galaxy S series of devices, in order to have 5 million devices ready to sell when they announce the device on August 2nd in New York.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the August 2nd announcement date, with SamMobile previously talking about a release on this date. SamMobile has also gotten hold of what appears to be an invite to a Galaxy Unpacked event for this date.

etnews is also speculating that Samsung will be launching the Note 7 with a ‘Dual-Edge OLED Display’, a first for the Note series which toyed with curved displays on the Note 4 Edge which launched in 2014. SamMobile has received reports that the display will be 5.8″ in size with a QHD resolution.

Other specs being rumoured for the Galaxy Note 7 include an iris scanner for additional biometric security. The rumour, this time from the Korea Herald, says that the Galaxy Note 7 will include a second front-facing camera which will be used for scanning the iris. The Herald points out that iris scanning adds more points of security to the authentication checking over 266 traits on an iris compared to just 40 on a fingerprint.

SamMobile has also speculated on internal specs for the Note 7, advising that the phone could be powered by a Snapdragon 823 SoC or obviously an Exynos chipset as Samsung has been doing in the last few years. The phone will also be IP68-certified for water and dust resistance just like the Galaxy S7. Samsung will also include a USB Type-C port for the first time, and for power users a 4,000 mAh battery will keep things going.

We’ll find out what’s going on with the Note 6 7? in just a short while. It sounds like Samsung will be delivering a top of the line device as usual, so stay tuned.
