Well, it’s the day after Google promised a sweet treat and they delivered just that…a sweet treat. The surprise turned out to be simply a birthday cake decorated with almost all the desserts Android has been named after since launching back in 2008.
The tweet sent out from the @Android account looks like this:
8 epic years. Naturally, we're celebrating with some of our favorite treats. #Android pic.twitter.com/t2GPZWSCJj
— Android (@Android) September 24, 2016
The desserts are pretty much all covered – Donut, Eclair, FroYo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice-Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and of course Nougat. Technically there’s no Cupcake there, but the cake itself is a pretty big cupcake itself so surely it counts.
It’s not the treat we wanted, but it does technically cover the base of being a treat. Well, back to looking forward to October 5th, Hiroshi Lockheimer sure is and he thinks it will be as important as the initial announcement of Android 8 years ago:
We announced the 1st version of Android 8 years ago today. I have a feeling 8 years from now we'll be talking about Oct 4, 2016.

We’ll find out soon enough
No, no, no Google, it’s underpromise – overdeliver ….
