After details of three variants of Huawei’s next flagship phone, the Mate 9, leaked yesterday it’s come to light that Huawei is sending out ‘save the date’ emails for a November 3rd event in Germany which is rumoured to be the launch of the Mate 9.

The invitations are talking about an exclusive press conference in Munich, Germany where there will be a ‘global unveiling of a new flagship device’ by CEO of Huawei Consumer Business, Richard Yu.

The Mate 8 launched last year in November at an event in China before an international unveiling followed at CES in early January. This timeline fits with a switching up of launch timelines for Huawei, although they did recently launch the Nova and Nova Plus at IFA earlier this month.

The Huawei Mate 9 is set to be a massive handset for Huawei in terms of specs, design and possibly market share. The Huawei aluminium unibody design has come forward in leaps and bounds as evidenced by the simply beautiful Huawei P9 they released earlier this year. The Mate 9 is rumoured to be launching in 3 different RAM/Storage options including 4GB/64GB, 4GB/128GB and a monstrous 6GB/256GB option.

The Mate 9 looks to be continuing with the Dual-Camera setup introduced on the P9, which is a collaboration between Hauwei and camera and lens maker Leica. The device will have a large 5.9″ 1080P display with Kirin Octa-Core processor and should also include a microSD card slot.

Huawei has been coming ahead in leaps and bounds over the last few years in terms of hardware design and the Mate 9 looks to be shaping up to be another great flagship if rumours and leaks are correct. We’ll be reaching out to Huawei for more information.

The biggest problem with huawei is emui. I would have bought the p9 ‘cept it felt like a phone a couple generations old simply because of the interface. Although the p9 is rootable, there are no roms to fix this and with the kirin chipsets there is never likely to be. Ditch emui and these would sell like hot cakes.

The hardware is looking great. Obvious question is what are Huawei like for software updates? Particularly the more frequent security updates that get released?

Not particularly fantastic, there was a beta of Nougat for the P9 floating around but it’s yet to be pushed. Security updates are sort of similar

This lack of reliable software support seems to be the main issue with most manufacturers now. It’s certainly one of my key issues when buying a new phone, which is why I currently have a Nexus. And why I may well end up with a Pixel despite the price.
