Viber is one of the big players in the third party messaging apps game, they’ve got applications for Windows, Linux, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS and of course – Android. Their continual updates make their app one of the front runners when it comes to functionality and today’s update has brought the (perhaps overdue) functionality of message back up and restore to their mobile client.

Here’s the change log that’s listed on the Play Store for the update that’s rolling out

  • Back up and restore messages- Manually save your message history and restore when needed
  • Animated GIF- Send, receive and view GIFs in any conversation
  • Viber Out calling plans-Access your balance and purchase new credits or special low-rate calling plans
  • Send money from the U.S. to virtually anyone in more than 200 countries and territories, powered by Western Union®. Send cash for pickup from a Western Union® agent location worldwide, or send directly to a bank account in nearly 50 countries

Two points of note on this: The first is that the backup needs to be manually triggered to go to your Google Drive, so keep that in mind if you’re factory resetting or changing phones. The second is that the sending money is (as noted) from US only so don’t get too excited yet.

Given all the platforms available, what’s your messaging weapon of choice and why?
