Samsung to announce Galaxy S8 … to an audience that will already know everything about it

Samsung hasn’t even managed to launch its new Galaxy S8 yet, and it has been comprehensively leaked, so much so that it has been the top news topic on Ausdroid for almost the entire month of March.

Rather than revisit every single leak, we’re going to defer to a German site — winfuture.de — which has put together every existing (and some new) details to tell us everything there is to know about the new Galaxy S8, a week before it’s announced.

First, the screen. The Galaxy S8 will feature a 5.8-inch display, while the Galaxy S8 Plus will jump to 6.2-inch. The resolution on both will be the same, though, at 2,960 x 1,440 pixels (a ratio of 18.5:9). Cameras are another important feature, and have always been high quality on Samsung phones. This year promises no different, with a 12-megapixel rear sensor with 1.4um pixel size. With a wide f/1.7 aperture with phase/laser detection autofocus, this camera is undoubtedly going to be one of the best of the year (if not the best).

The iris scanner from the Galaxy Note 7 makes its return in the Galaxy S8, alongside an 8-megapixel front camera with the same f/1.7 aperture. While that’s good, the real story is the iris sensor, which is supposedly “ultra-sensitive” to give the highest level of security and accuracy in authentication. Of course, for those who prefer not to use iris scanning, the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor will do the job too.

Both phones will be certified to IP68, so they can exceed 30 minutes in 1.5m of water depth, though we wouldn’t recommend actually doing this; it’s a contingency, not something you should plan on doing regularly, especially in chlorinated or salty water.

We understand the Galaxy S8 range will continue the trend of MicroSD support, with support for 256GB cards on top of the base 64GB space in each Galaxy S8. The larger standard capacity, and MicroSD support, is undoubtedly to accommodate the 4K photos that the camera can take in video and photo.

While the built-in RAM is likely to be “only” 4GB, we’re expecting that to be more than enough to make the Galaxy S8 work and work well. Wireless connectivity will include Gigabit WLAN with dual-band support, LTE up to 450mbps, Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC. European models will see Samsung’s new Exynos 8895, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 will be used in other regions. It isn’t yet clear which version we’ll see in Australia, but the Exynos variant seems more likely.

Battery specs aren’t firm just yet, though it seems the Galaxy S8 will be 3,000mAh, and the Plus will jump to 3,450 mAh.
