HTC has always liked to be a little different with their smartphones. The company has never liked doing things just because others do them and their next phone could be just the ticket to boost their flagging sales.
From the reliable source, Evan Blass, the report via Venture Beat says that HTC is working on a third U series phone, this time simply called the U. The phone will be based on the previously leaked HTC Ocean concept that was shown off last year.

The HTC U will feature an innovative input system that allows sensors embedded into the metal frame of the phone, either side of a 5.5″ WQHD (2560×1440) resolution display control a range of customisable actions through gestures such as squeezing or swiping the frame using ‘Edge Sense’.
Inside the phone will be Qualcomms latest processor, the in-demand, yet scarce Snapdragon 835 with either 32GB or 64GB of on-board storage. HTC will be attempting to gain a foothold in mobile photography with the U, using a 12MP Sony Exmor IMX362 sensor on teh rear while a more selfie friendly 16MP IMX351 sensor will adorn the front.
According to the report, the HTC U will be announced in the middle, or at the end of April with a global release due in May. HTC has previously announced there will be a Snapdragon 835 based phone released, and this very well could be it.
