Sony has today heralded the beginning of the launch of their new range of X series handsets announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, bringing the Xperia XA1 to Australia from today.

The Xperia XA1 is Sony’s mid-range play with Sony notably updating the camera on-board to include the massive 23MP 1/2.3” Exmor RS sensor with f/2.0 aperture previously seen on their flagship Xperia Z5 handset. Sony has also included an 8MP sensor on the front of the phone which includes a 23mm wide-angle lens to ensure you capture all the details in those all important selfies. The camera also includes a wave gesture called ‘Hand Shutter’ allowing you to wave to capture a selfie.

The phone brings Sony’s new “seamless loop” surface design, which offers a continuous curve around the sides of the phone and gives the effect of almost no side bezel. When the phone is held, the curved design gives a borderless, full-width viewing of the 5″ HD (720P) display.

The phone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek helio P20 (MT6757) SoC, with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (with a microSD card slot) and a 2,300 mAh battery powering the lot. The phone will come with Android 7.0 installed on the device, with Sony’s UI overlaid on top, there’s a few smart functions built in there including Xperia Actions, a new addition to the latest Xperia range which aims to learn users’ usage patterns by suggesting customisable settings and personalised recommendations.

The Moto G5 Plus is the one to get at this price point, that’s for sure.

This would have been a brilliant phone if only it had a fingerprint reader.
