The upcoming Google Pixel 2 launch is coming up fast according to rumour, and that means we’re seeing more details leak. This morning some tidbits have surfaced regarding storage, water/dust resistance and more.

According to 9to5Google, the Pixel 2/Pixel XL 2 will have either 64GB or 128GB of on-board storage (no, as usual they won’t have microSD card slots), with 32GB models not being made available. This could make the devices a little more expensive than last year, although it shouldn’t add too much with the component prices between 32GB and 64GB not terribly different.

The smaller sized Pixel 2 will come with a 4.97″ 1920×1080 resolution display and yes, those bezels we’ve seen in leaks are definitely there. The bezels have been kept to accommodate front-facing speakers which will be favoured in place of the 3.5mm headphone jack which is definitely gone on this model (and we suspect it’s gone on the Pixel XL 2 as well). The ‘good’ news for wired headphone users is a USB-C to headphone jack will be included in the box.

The Pixel 2 series will also be coming with IP68 water/dust resistance, a big step up from last years model which carried a paltry IP53 water/dust resistance rating.

On the camera, the large lens appears to be there according to the heavily masked image supplied by 9to5Google. It will also have send/receive IR Laser for fast auto-focus, with the low-light performance of the Pixel 2 series a primary focus for Google, this larger lens is likely covering a sensor with large pixel size. Google will apparently stick with Electronic image stabilisation (EIS) rather than Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) on the Pixel 2.

There will be slight improvements to the ambient display on the Pixel 2, with a new line added below the time to show date and information on any alarms you have set.

Of course the Pixel will have some new tricks in software, with Android 8.1 expected to launch on the Pixel, and like the Assistant before it we expect to see Google Lens included as a launch feature.

If the October 5th date for the announcement of the Pixel 2 is legit (and we hope it is), we’ll be finding out all about the Pixel 2 very soon.

I would go for the one plus over the pixel 2 any day with that screen and no headphone jack.

    Pixel 1 XL price: US$769
    Leaked V30 price : US$749

Given that this version will lack many of the things that make the V30 the desired device it is, whilst being built on the same chassis, they would have to be significantly less expensive than last year.

Wishful thinking I fear … based on last year I suspect pricing will be related to iPhone pricing, not the V30
