After the announcement of Oreo we’re still seeing companies working on which handsets will be updated to the latest version, and with a lot of manpower required to update software it’s generally a small list. Motorola has this morning outlined which models they will be targeting for the update.
The update to Oreo (Android 8.0) will begin in the ‘Fall’, so basically this Spring here in Australia, and the list is fairly predictable, though disappointingly sparse considering Motorolas previous reign as update king. The list of Motorola phones that will be updated to Android 8.0 includes:
- moto z
- moto z Droid
- moto z Force Droid
- moto z Play
- moto z Play Droid
- moto z2 Play
- moto z2 Force Edition
- moto x4
- moto g5
- moto g5 Plus
- moto g5S
- moto g5S Plusv
Motorola has advised that the update will include the high points of Google’s Android 8.0 software including ‘faster speeds, longer battery life, split-screen capabilities, smart text selection, improved notifications, autofill framework for your trickiest of passwords, and of course, the all new Google Play Protect’.
Disappointingly there is no E-series or even the recently launched C-series handsets included in the update list, nor is the Moto G4, a phone only a year old at this stage. We can always hope that Motorola will update the list but I wouldn’t be holding my breath.
Motorola Australia hasn’t yet updated their Australian software update page advising which handsets will receive Oreo as yet, but we’re sure they’ll be right onto that soon.
I was pretty concerned about updates coming from a 6P but I was sick to death of the crappy battery life so took a chance. I gotta be honest updates have been pretty good so far, when I first got the phone I went through a bunch of OTA’s to get me to Marshmallow, then I got the update to 7.1.1 and now this news that it’ll be updated to 8.0, and I purchased the phone AFTER the Z2 Play had come out, this phone is probably the first smartphone I’ve been genuinely content with
I think one of the other X series that came out the same time is still waiting too. I think from now on it is better to buy a popular phone and hope one of the 3rd party dev groups make a rom for your device.
Considering they had the Moto X Play on their list for 7.x and it has still not seen anything I would be surprised if even half of these devices get the update. I think one of the other X series that came out the same time is still waiting too. I think from now on it is better to buy a popular phone and hope one of the 3rd party dev groups make a rom for your device.
The ONLY reason I’ll ever consider buying another Moto device is BECAUSE so many of their devices are “officially” supported by the Lineage OS team.
Running Nougat (7.1.2) on my Moto G3, thanks to Lineage OS. Before that, was salty as f**k that Motorola/Lenovo only gave the G3 ONE major update, and was firmly committed to NEVER buying another Moto device again!
Excellent 🙂
Hopefully this fixes the Blueborne issue too.
“split-screen capabilities”
Wasn’t that was Nougat added?
