Australia has some of the most diverse, beautiful, and yes, dangerous animals on the planet. Australia has some of the most beautiful birds on the planet, and you can help to track them as part of the Aussie Backyard Bird Count – and yes, there’s an app for that.

The Aussie Backyard Bird Count collates information based on surveys submitted by keen birdwatchers around Australia, information which allows Bird Life Australia to list the common species that live where people live around Australia. The Aussie Backyard Bird Count runs from the 23rd to 29th of October and takes just 20 minutes of your time to list the birds appearing in your backyard, neighbourhood park, or favourite green patch.

The simplest way to take part is of course using the Aussie Bird Count app available on both Android and iOS. The app contains a tool to count the birds, then submit the number and type. Identification is aided by a field guide built into the app which includes pictures, and descriptions of birds common in Australia. It’s not a comprehensive guide, containing just 400 of the 800 bird species present in Australia – but it’s good enough to identify the birds appearing in your area.

Though seemingly altruistic, you can also win prizes for simply submitting a count. Prizes include a pair of Swarovski Optik EL 10×32 Binoculars, a Bird’s the Word Gift Voucher, Bird Portraits, a copy of The Australian Bird Guide or some neat Kookaburra Bird Pins.
