At CES overnight, Sony has announced three new phones at their media conference with the rumoured Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and L2 now official. As of today, Sony Mobile Australia has advised that only the Xperia XA2 will be heading down under.

Xperia XA2

The Xperia XA2 is the focus for the Australian market with a decently specced mid-range handset that includes a high-end 23MP rear camera sensor and 8MP front-facing camera with a 120° super wide-angle field of view. Unlike the previous model, Sony has stepped things up with the processor in the XA2, offering a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage with microSDXC support (up to 256GB).

The phone is designed to fit in your hand with a 5.2″ FullHD (1920×1080) resolution display that runs edge-to-edge, and in a major change to their usual design Sony has opted to go with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for the first time eschewing their power button infused sensors.

Full specs include:

  • 5.2″ full HD 1080p Display
  • Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 630 Mobile Platform
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB eMMC internal memory with microSDXC support (up to 256GB)
  • Main camera: 23MP, 84° wide-angle F2.0 lens, 1/2.3” Exmor RS™ for mobile image sensor and 120fps slow-motion video recording
  • Front camera: 8MP super wide-angle lens F2.4, 1/4″ Exmor R for mobile™ for mobile image sensor
  • A-GNSS (GPS + GLONASS), WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC
  • USB-C
  • Android 8.0 (Oreo)
  • 3300 mAh with Qnovo Adaptive Charging (support for Quick Charge 3.0)
  • 142 x 70 x 9.7mm @ 171 grams

At launch, Sony will offer a new leather-look Style Cover Stand allowing you to stand the phone up for video playback.

No local pricing or availability for the Xperia XA2 has been announced as yet, with the announcements for that coming closer to launch.

Xperia XA2 Ultra and Xperia L2

While they’re not launching in Australia the Xperia L2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra are also great phones. Sony has made some slight improvements to the Xperia XA2 Ultra, while the L2 is positioned more as an entry level device.

The XA2 Ultra is small step up from the standard XA2 offering a larger 6″ FullHD resolution display (which also runs edge-to-edge) as well as slightly more RAM with 4GB available. A choice between 32GB or 64GB of on-board storage as well as the support for microSDXC cards (up to 256GB) is still included as well. The camera remains the same with a 23MP rear sensor and 8MP front-facing camera with 120° super wide-angle lens and f/2.4 aperture.

The Xperia L2 is the real entry level phone for the new Sony Xperia range with a 5.5″ 720p display, though not quite running edge-to-edge as the XA2 series does. The Xperia L2 has a 13MP rear camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture, while an 8MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture is on the front. The phone is powered by a MediaTek MT6737T SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage with microSD card slot and has a3,300mAh battery inside.

As above, Sony has advised only the XA2 is heading to Australia, though if they change their minds we’ll be sure to let you know.
