After beta testing the software with users for several months, Samsung has begun rolling out the Android 8.0 (Oreo) update to the Galaxy S8 and S8+.
The rollout appears to have begun in Germany, with Allaboutsamsung.de reporting that the final release update is heading to Beta testers now. The testers are receiving a 487MB release, while users not involved in the Beta should see a significantly larger update when the OTA rolls out more broadly.
For Android purists, the news isn’t good with the Samsung Oreo update for the Galaxy S8/S8+ reportedly not supporting Googles faster update strategy: Project Treble. The update does include all the February security patch, as well as the rest of the features of Oreo and an updated version of the Samsung Experience UX.
At this stage none of the Australian carriers are listing the Android 8.0 update for the Galaxy S8/S8+ as being tested, but that could change shortly. No reports of the Oreo update being received on unlocked handsets has been reported either, but it could only be a matter of time.
If you’re seeing the update on your Galaxy S8/S8+ then let us know.
Phone updated today (S8, optus)
while im not stressed about getting major software updates , security updates i look forward too , my last one was october 1 , four and a bit months sounds a bit long in this day and age given every second day we read about some new electronic threat .
Or am i just being a big sook ??
As an S8 user it sucks there’s no treble. Not that I’m surprised. More importantly if it brings a device lifetime stable user interface like the much upgraded note 8 software I’ll be more than happy. Never experienced the dreaded Samsung slowdowns with my S2 but the slowdown on the S8 is very noticeable. I get freezes of about a second that were not there when the phone was new and it just feels marginally slower all the time.
should hopegully get mine via Telstra by 2019 then!!
I plan on just flashing the generic AU oreo rom when it becomes available. I don’t need to see an Optus logo on bootup especially as I’m not an optus customer and I’ll be damned if I’m waiting for carriers to test software for months and then release it buggy anyway.
Did anyone notice that Firmware Name is *CRAP* ? 🙂
Also, it’s only 487Mb where e.g. Sony Xperia XZ Premium Oreo is 1.3Gb. I suspect a lot of stuff is missing in this upgrade.
It has AAC & LDAC Bluetooth codecs! Finally, I’ll be able to listen to my music in without sacrificing quality on my Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones.
This is what I am exactly waiting for. I’ve got the Sony WH-1000XM2 and still using wire until Oreo comes out
487Mb is the size for beta users. So I gather the update for non beta users will be larger.
Clearly stated this is an update for beta users. That is the full update for non beta users will be significantly larger.
