It’s only been a couple of months since Sony announced the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact at Mobile World Congress, but tonight they’ve unveiled an updated model with the Xperia XZ2 now sporting a 4K resolution display and dual rear cameras.
The highlights for the Xperia XZ2 Premium is the upgraded 5.8″ 4K resolution display and new ‘Motion Eye Dual camera’ system that Sony says can ‘capture more than the human eye can see’. The specs are similar to the previously announced XZ2 phones, though more RAM is always welcome, with the XZ2 Premium getting a jump to 6GB.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium adds a 12MP Black and White sensor to the 19MP Sensor found on the Xperia XZ2/XZ2 Compact. Sony says that the new dual camera system offers ‘world’s highest ISO 12800 sensitivity for video recording in a smartphone, as well as ultra-high sensitivity 51200 for photos’. We’ll leave Huawei and Sony to talk about this, with Huawei claiming the P20 Pro has a top ISO of 102400.
As well as this jump in ISO and addition of Black and White sensor, the new dual-camera setup also supports the 4K HDR video capture and 960fps Super slow motion in HD or Full HD resolution that Sony introduced on the other XZ2 series phones.
The 4K display is 11% larger and 30% brighter than their previous 4K display says Sony, and is perfect for displaying your recorded 4K HDR content on. The display runs right from edge-to-edge with minimal bezel around the sides, though the top and bottom bezels do remain.
Sony has also included their S-Force Front Surround sound system for a truly immersive multimedia experience. The new “Dynamic Vibration System” that Sony introduced in the Xperia XZ2 series is also present, the system analyses audio playing on your device and adds vibrations at the appropriate time such as when an explosion goes off in a movie.
The body is covered in Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and rear with the new curved design making it more comfortable to hold in your hand. The body is also dust/waterproofed with an IP65/68 rating.
Sony will release the phone in two colours: Black and Chrome, with that Chrome option again looking very sharp.
Sony says that the Xperia XZ2 Premium will be available globally from ‘Summer 2018’, so we’re assuming it will be here in Australia as well. We’ve reached out to Sony Mobile Australia for information about a launch here in Australia.
Any idea when will Huawei P20 pro be available in Australia?
No announced dates for the P20 Pro at this stage. When I asked Huawei about it in China recently, they acknowledged they were quite late to market in Australia with their phones due to carrier testing requirements. I think we may see it around June/July – but have nothing to back that up with, though the P10/P9/P8 launched here around then
Still no words on the XZ2 and XZ2 C? i was hoping for some indication following the Premium announcement
Weren’t we all! Very keen for the XZ2 phones – the Chrome as always looks fabulous!
Maybe i missed it ,but I’m getting a vibe that the premium model will be quiet wide in its dinensions
at 80 mm ?
Perhaps the premium will stay the old 16.9 aspect ratio ?
As a an old fart with big hands , i like the sound of this .
It appears sony is following the other cheap sods and giving the headphone jack the bullet ☹.
