Plans for a more YouTube focused music service from Google isn’t really new, but it’s getting more detailed with a report by Droid Life outlining what will happen with the new service including what will happen with Google Play Music.
Google has previously confirmed there is a service coming, with YouTube’s global head of music Lyor Cohen confirming it was coming at the South-by-Southwest (SXSW) festival earlier this year. While Google weren’t ready to unveil YouTube Music Remix at SXSW, it is coming, and it means the end of Google Play Music according to the report, with users of the Google Play Music transitioned over to YouTube Remix by the end of this year.
YouTube Music will be heavily focused on content discovery, with Google Play Music features such as recommendations, smarter playlists, and music recommendations based on the time of day, your location and more being included in the service.
In response to the report, Google reached out to Droid Life to provide this statement:
We’ve previously announced the combination of the YouTube Music and Google Play product teams — music is very important to Google so it’s critical we have one offering that meets the needs of consumers and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.
It seems that YouTube Music Remix is definitely coming but the questions of when it will be announced? How much it will cost? Will it be available in Australia? Will it still include YouTube Red are yet to be answered. A number of people have also asked the question of whether Google Play Music’s awesome music locker feature, which lets you upload 50,000 of your own tracks to the cloud, will be coming along for the ride as well.
We may see something on this being announced at Google I/O in just a couple of weeks, but it’s coming. Are you interested in this new service?
I don’t want videos, I want music audio only. If this pushes video down my throat I’ll move to Spotify for sure.
Google likes making great services and then destroying them, Google now was great on phones & now we’ve got a largely inferior replacement in Google Assistant. Messaging is completely insane & this appears to be just another backwards step
This move will screw over Australian subscribers of GPM, who are not on moderate and above Gb (25Gb and up) per month contracts. Folks on pre-paid won’t be able to afford the download cost to stream music from Google services, when it goes YT video only through YT Remix.
Very true. I streamed music once that was youtube music and it was only a few hours, 6gb.. lucky I had double data that month. Way more than plain music.
Better bet, just use Radio Paradise, you don’t get to choose what you want but they play some good stuff.
I have been using both Google Play Music and YouTube Music apps. I use both for different purposes. I hope this would combine the best features of both…
I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be included with Youtube Red considering they would annoy lots of people by removing a large section of features that it already give you.
