Google has gone ahead in leaps and bounds with their DayDream Virtual Reality platform, but Augmented Reality (AR) is the dream for most people and according to a new report Google working on an AR headset as well.
The report from WinFuture.de says that Google’s headset – codenamed A65 – is being prototyped by the same company who manufactured the Pixel C – Quanta – and is described as ‘not unlike the Microsoft HoloLens’ in design.
The headset is apparently powered by a Qualcomm processor with the quad-core QSC603 and octa-core QSC605 both in contention. The QSC platform is reportedly a derivative of the Snapdragon SoC and includes support for Bluetooth 5.1, Gigabit Wi-Fi and GPS.
The platform is adept at graphics rendering – a key consideration for an AR headset – with support for OpenGL, OpenCL and Vulkan. It will also contain a neural processing engine which can integrate with the Android Neural Networks API.
Exactly when or if we’ll see the headset launched isn’t clear, but as it’s apparently still in the early phases it could be quite a while.
