Overnight Asus held their annual press conference at Computex and unveiled its first Gaming Smartphone: The ROG Phone. Touting the catch line “Dare to be different” the announcement came among a number of others aimed at the bleeding edge of the gaming market.
The design has been thought through with gamers in mind, much of the functionality set out to operate in landscape mode to optimise the experience and allow peripherals to be connected without interfering with the ergonomics of the device.
The ultra-comfortable design of ROG Phone includes unique side-mounted ports, and the enhanced, ultra-responsive game controls — including two programmable ultrasonic AirTriggers and advanced force-feedback haptics — let gamers focus all their skills on the game, giving them the edge they need for total domination.
Looking at the specs, there’s plenty to like there too:
- 6-inch AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time to give the best gaming experience
- Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 Processor
- Gaming-optimized Qualcomm® Adreno™ 630 GPU
- 128GB/512GB Storage
- 8GB RAM
- USB C connectivity for fast charging and data transfer
- 4000mAh battery
Their “GameCool vapor-chamber cooling system” that also has a detachable AeroActive Cooler (to give you extra cooling on longer gaming sessions) are there to keep everything cool and maintain high frame rates during play.
They also unveiled an array of accessories to improve the gaming experience ranging from the TwinView Dock for dual-screen handheld mode; the Mobile Desktop Dock for desktop-style gaming; and the Gamevice controller (Similar to the MotoMods clip on controller) with WiGig Dock using 60GHz Wi-Fi for big-screen gaming. As part of the development of their ROG phone, a partnership has been forged with Garena who are the developer of the survival shooter games: Free Fire — to explore the endless possibilities that ROG Phone brings to the gaming scene.
This is a huge leap forward in mobile gaming to bring the mobile gaming and mobile world into one realm, delivered right and with a delivery of exciting games – this could be huge.
Editors Note: Before you get too excited, Asus has never released a phone here in Australia, and all but pulled out of the tablet market here. So while Asus do have the occasional Chromebook launch here in Australia, it’s still doubtful that Asus would bother having a phone certified for use here in Australia given it’s an unproven market.
