The fight against cancer is an ongoing protracted battle, and to keep up the fight money is needed to support researchers. An easy way to help, and get a little something for yourself is by purchasing the Genome Power Pack from a Vodafone store.
The concept of the Genome Power Pack is pretty simple, the Vodafone Foundation has partnered with The Garvan Institute for Medical Research to begin selling the Genome Power Pack. It’s a power bank which will be going on-sale from tomorrow at selected Vodafone stores, offering 6,000mAh of recharging power for $49 with all proceeds going to help Garvan research safer and more effective treatments for children with cancer.
Every year in Australia, almost 800 children are diagnosed with cancer, many of them with a terminal prognosis. The Garvan Institute, who we’ve previously heard about through the Vodafone Foundations with their Dreamlab distributed computing app, is now working on the Genome Power project which is sequencing the genome of cancer from kids with high-risk, aggressive cancers. The genome sequencing of these tumours will allow doctors to provide better target treatment – basically, the aim is for each child to get precision treatment that matches their tumour.
So, back to the Genome Power Pack. It’s a Zaggs brand battery bank from distributor Cellnet with a 6,000mAh capacity with has a simple power button to start charging, it includes an LED indicator to show how much power is left and also has a nifty LED torch you can use. The battery bank has dual USB outputs – 5V/2.1A and 5V/1A – so you can plug almost anything into it.
Supporting cancer research is a good cause, but we’ve all got a battery bank laying around so if you really don’t want a new battery bank, but still want to chip in, you can simply donate using a tap of your credit card or NFC enabled digital wallet on a Square reader that will be setup in Vodafone stores from June 25th – or if you don’t live near a participating Vodafone store, you can donate online here.
