On Saturday we reported on a not-so-cryptic Tweet from OnePlus about the existence of a red version of their much vaunted OnePlus 6. It was meant to arrive on July the second, and true to their word OnePlus have today made it official.

In a post on their forum, OnePlus’s CEO Pete Lau has detailed the new OnePlus 6 variant along with how it came to be. After the success of the Lava Red OnePlus 5T they decided to try it out with the OnePlus 6 as well. Hundreds of different colours were apparently tested before landing on a colour they call OnePlus 6 Red.

Pete went on to say that they believe the colour red to be associated with strength and attitude but can also be elegant and humble. OnePlus feel that this is a true representation of their core values “regarding product and industrial design”.

The OnePlus 6 Red is “not overly bright” and to create a balance between visual and tactile they used a “new film coating process” that has never been used on a smartphone before. Included in the process was an added layer of “brightening film” which apparently costs $5 per device. The end result they believe is “just right”.

From next week the OnePlus 6 Red will be available “across the globe” (but not Australia) in the 8GB/128GB configuration priced at $579US. As yet there is no word on any future availability in Australia and with OnePlus making such stunning-looking – and performing – phones we can only hope that they decide to sell it directly to us sooner rather than later.

Would you buy this Red variant? What about if it was available in Australia?

Damn it! Now I want a red one, with the gold switch of the Marvel version.
