Last week we posted an article suggesting that the upcoming OnePlus 6T will have an in-display fingerprint sensor based on leaked packaging. Today OnePlus have confirmed to CNET that it will indeed have the in-display fingerprint sensor.
At this stage there are very few phones available that have an in-display fingerprint sensor but we do know of some coming soon. OnePlus usually base their designs on OPPO chassis and the 6T looks set to be no different, being based on the in-display packing OPPO R17 Pro. Speaking to CNET OnePlus, who are calling their on-display fingerprint sensing “Screen Unlock”, said that the use of the on-display sensor “streamlines the phone’s design” and also means users do not have to lift up their phones to unlock them (or lean over the top of it to face unlock it).
We unlock our phones multiple times a day, and Screen Unlock reduces the number of steps to complete the action. By adding this feature as an addition to other display unlocking options such as Face Unlock, users will have options to unlock the display in a way that is most efficient for them.
OnePlus went on to say to CNET that they originally intended for the technology to be added to the 5T but at that stage it was not mature enough to be able to be relied upon. Now that it is going to be included in the 6T means a slight redesign of the phone. The 6T will be 0.45mm thicker than the OnePlus 6 with the internals rearranged to allow the fingerprint sensor which sits below the display to fit in the correct location.
The screenshot from the OnePlus 6T that CNET are using shows the date of October 17 which may well be the date that the OnePlus 6T is announced on. While it seems unlikely that they will revert from their previous launches and sell it here we can remain hopefully that one day they will decide to test the waters in our tiny little pond that we call home.
